Opportunities for parents and carers

5 ways to get involved in Girlguiding as a parent or carer

Get involved in a way that works around the time you’re able to give.

Everyone is welcome to join Girlguiding. That includes you as a parent or carer! There are ways to get involved in guiding – no matter how much time you have or how new you are to guiding – and some from the comfort of your own home.

Why get involved?

  1. It allows your child to have the best experience possible with Girlguiding. They’ll feel supported and be able to do new things they might not have done without your help. Plus, you’ll get to meet new people yourself!
  2. Girls tell us they enjoy doing our programme more when they’re able to share it with others, whether it be their unit or friends and family at home.
  3. People who volunteer with Girlguiding said they feel up to 4 times happier than those who volunteer at least once per month at other organisations. It’s a chance to give back, share your skills and discover a slice of joy.

Here are 5 ways to get involved:

1. Help out

Did you know you can help twice per term before you need to register as a regular volunteer? See what helping flexibly can look like.

You can get involved in a way that fits around your busy schedule. You could:

  • Help to find resources or activity materials for a unit meeting.
  • We all know how important good snacks are, you could help by popping to the shop and grabbing those all-important treats!
  • Attend an event to support your child’s unit leader to run fun experience for girls – or help organise transport.
  • Speak to your child’s unit leader to run your own unit meeting! You might have a special skill like first aid, an interesting job or a hobby you can share with girls.
  • Look at our supporting volunteer roles that you can do from home – like helping your child’s unit keep track of its finances and admin.
  • Team up with other parents and carers to create a volunteering rota so you can lend a hand in a way that suits you all.
  • Talk to your employer about employer-support volunteering so you can take time off every so often to join guiding adventures.

Check out all the different volunteer roles we have available and then register to volunteer.

2. Donate or fundraise

By making a monthly gift, you’ll become a friend of Girlguiding. We’d love for you to join and help more girls to thrive in Girlguiding. You can also make a one-off donation or donate directly to your child’s local unit.

There are other ways you can get involved by fundraising. Whether you organise a fundraising event or take on a challenge with your friends, family or even child. We’ll support you find your own adventure!

3. Earn badges from home

Interest badges are a type of Girlguiding badge girls can earn by exploring new interests or diving deeper into their passions. Girls can complete them wherever they choose – in unit meetings, on holiday or at home.

From blogging to dancing, girls can pick something that interests them using our badge finder, complete activities and earn a badge for it. And we’re creating 72 new ones launching in 2025!

See how other parents and carers are supporting their child to complete interest badges at home.

4. Join the insight and innovation pool

Our insight and innovation pool is a group of members – volunteers, girls, parents and carers – who give us feedback on new project launches or everyday improvements. They help us make sure members are at the heart of what we do.

We recently asked parents and carers what they thought of our programme which resulted in us creating 72 new interest badges. It’s a chance to have your say and make a real impact for you and your child.
