How we make uniform affordable
We work hard to make sure that our uniform is reasonably priced. We have a range of clothing available to suit both weekly unit meetings and more formal activities and events. In each section, there's flexibility for girls on what they wear - you choose from a mix and match selection to fit your budget.
Our units can financially support girls and volunteers to be able to wear uniform. And some volunteers run uniform recycling schemes in their local areas . Please speak to your unit leader to find out the support available for you.
Rainbows uniform
Rainbows are our most colourful section. They can choose from a range of practical and fun uniform pieces.
What Rainbows wear
All girls should have a uniform top and bottom. These can be worn for unit meetings, days out and events where a formal uniform is needed.
The uniform range includes:
Girls can accessorise with additional items from our range - for example, a baseball cap - but these aren’t part of the uniform.
Where to put Rainbow badges
- Promise badges: Rainbows should always wear their Promise badge on the left-hand side, so it sits close to their heart.
- Interest badges, skills builders and awards: as girls earn these badges they should be sewn on to any item of uniform. Many girls like to add these onto their hoodies or their badge sash.
Only woven badges that girls have earned should be sewn onto Rainbow uniform.
Neckerchiefs
A neckerchief is a square of a cloth that's worn around the neck. Rainbows don’t need to wear neckerchiefs with their uniform, it’s up to your child or her unit. We have a great range of colourful neckerchiefs in our shop.
Brownies uniform
Girls in Brownies wear a practical uniform that’s ready for adventure!
What Brownies wear
All girls should have a uniform top and bottom chosen from the Brownies uniform range. These can be worn for unit meetings, trips and events where formal uniform is needed.
The range includes:
Brownies might also want to accessorise with other items from our range, for example, with a baseball cap, but this isn’t part of the uniform.
Where do Brownie badges go?
- Promise badges: these should be worn on the badge sash or worn on the left-hand side of their uniform, closest to their heart.
- Interest badges, skills builders and awards: girls can choose where to sew these badges. The badge sash is a popular option, and some girls add badges to their gilets or skorts.
- Union flag badge: this badge should be worn at international events, on the left shoulder of the uniform top.
Only woven badges for participation or achievement should be sewn onto the Brownies uniform.
Neckerchiefs
A neckerchief is a square of a cloth that's worn around the neck. Brownies don’t need to wear neckerchiefs, but some units choose to. Girls can choose from the colourful range of neckerchiefs in our shop.
At international events, Brownies can wear the UK international neckerchief. This with, or instead of, a national neckerchief for Girlguiding Cymru, Scotland or Ulster.
Guides uniform
Guides have flexibility with what they wear as uniform. They often agree on their uniform guidelines together with other girls in the unit.

All girls should have a uniform top or the uniform dress. Uniform tops can be worn with any bottoms that suit the occasion or activity.
The range includes:
When girls choose to wear the Guides dress then they need to wear a top underneath, such as the long-sleeved Guides top, or another top in navy or black.
For formal events, Guides can wear the dress or a uniform top with either:
- Uniform skirt and leggings or tights in black or navy.
- Smart skirt or trousers in black or navy – like what they might wear to school.
Where do Guide badges go?
- Promise badge: needs to go on the left-hand side of their uniform top, closest to the heart.

Neckerchiefs
A neckerchief is a square of a cloth that's worn around the neck. Guides and their units might want to wear a neckerchief as part of their uniform. Girls can choose from the colourful range of neckerchiefs in our shop.

Rangers uniform
In Rangers, you can wear different uniform depending on what you’re doing or where you're going. It’s often agreed as a unit what the uniform will be for unit meetings.

All Rangers should have a uniform top. You can wear it with any bottoms that suit the occasion or event.
The uniform tops available are:
For formal events, you should wear the formal blouse with a smart skirt or trousers in black or navy.
Where do Ranger badges go?
Rangers should follow these guidelines for adding badges to their uniform:
- Promise badges: you can add a Ranger badge tab to the right-hand side of your uniform to display metal badges like the Promise badge. If you don’t have a badge tab, then wear your Promise badge on the left-hand side, closest to your heart.
- Interest badges, awards and skills builders: with your unit and leader you’ll choose where and how to display your badges.
- Union Flag badge: for international events or when travelling abroad with guiding, this Union Flag badge should be worn on the left shoulder.
Neckerchiefs
A neckerchief is a square of a cloth that's worn around the neck. Rangers can decide as a unit if they want to wear neckerchiefs. If your unit chooses to wear them then a colourful range is available through the Girlguiding shop. Neckerchiefs shouldn’t be worn with a formal uniform.
At international events, Rangers can wear the UK international neckerchief. This with, or instead of, a national neckerchief for either Girlguiding Cymru, Scotland or Ulster.
Young leaders
Rangers who are also young leaders won't be expected to buy both sets of uniform. Instead they can wear their Rangers uniform with the young leader badge tab. If members wish to buy both uniforms, then they’re welcome to do so.
The young leader uniform range is available through our shop - it includes a badge tab, blouse, polo shirt and hoodie.
Redesigning our uniform
For the first time in over 30 years, we're redesigning our whole uniform range. It's an exciting opportunity to help us grow and recruit more members. And we're committed to making sure the new uniform is affordable, sustainable, distinctive, comfortable, and clearly shows who we are. The new range will be available in 2026, and there'll be a transition period after it's introduced. We don't want or expect everyone to buy the new range straight away.
We've documented the process of co-designing the new range on our uniform hub. Check there for stories and information about how we're working with girls and volunteers to make a uniform that every member feels proud to wear.
