How girls have influenced policy

We help girls make change by giving them a platform to influence decision makers

Girls in Girlguiding have helped influence government to make some amazing changes that are improving the lives of young people across the UK.

What have girls asked for from policymakers?

Ahead of the 2024 General Election, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, advocates and volunteers took 10 asks for decision makers to Parliament. Girls told us they wanted stronger safety measures for online spaces, more action to protect the environment, better access to nature and support for their mental health and wellbeing. Developed by girls, for girls, Girlguiding’s manifesto ‘For all girls’ represents the issues that matter most to girls and the need for real change to make the UK a safer, fairer place.

What has the government done in response?

Since the election, the government has acted on issues we raised. The period products scheme in schools has been extended until July 2026 and there are plans to deliver real change on mental health, violence against women and girls and support for young people. Other changes include:

  • Majority women in the UK, Scottish, Northern Irish and Welsh cabinets.
  • Women and Equalities minister in the UK cabinet.
  • Mental health professionals in every school by 2030.
  • Votes at 16 for the next General Election.
  • The implementation of the Online Safety Act.

We continue to give girls a platform to discuss issues with decision makers, by meeting MPs, attending party conferences and speaking out on issues affecting all girls.

How everyone can get involved

You don’t need to head to Parliament to influence policy. You could invite your local MP, councillor or mayor along to a meeting. If there’s something you really want to change, you can write to your MP about it, telling them why it's important to you. You can also take part in programme activities like our make change or influence skills builder and campaigning interest badge.
