Website accessibility statement

We want our website to be accessible for everyone, no matter what device or assistive technology you’re using

This accessibility statement was last updated on 18 February 2025.

Girlguiding values inclusion, equality and accessibility for all. That’s why we want to make sure everyone can easily access and use our website, whatever their needs or abilities.

Accessible programme books and resources

Our programme resources, including activity cards, skills builders, badge books and handbooks, are available in a range of different accessible formats including e-reader formats.

If you need these accessible resources, please email [email protected]. Please include:

  • Your name and email address.
  • Your accessibility needs.
  • The type of format you need.

The programme team will be in touch as soon as possible to help you.

Known accessibility issues

We try hard to make sure our website (https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/) is accessible, but we know there’s still more to do. Below is a list of things we need to fix or improve. Please email us at [email protected] if you come across a problem that’s not on the list.

  1. Our PDF documents may not work correctly with screen readers.
  2. Some images don’t have alternative text for screen readers.
  3. Some decorative images haven’t been hidden from screen readers.
  4. The navigation shows the user’s current page visually, but this isn’t shown to screen reader users.
  5. In some parts of the text, there are elements which break up paragraphs into short segments, which disrupts the flow for screen reader users.
  6. Some ordered lists haven’t been formatted for screen reader accessibility.
  7. The heading structure for the list of policies isn’t completely logical.
  8. When an input is chosen on the activity finder page, there’s no label on it for screen readers.
  9. Card components announce all information displayed to screen readers in one go, which may be overwhelming to users.
  10. Error messages in forms aren’t automatically announced to screen reader users.
  11. Some aspects of autocomplete are missing on forms.
  12. Colour is used as the only way to identify links in some areas.
  13. Carousel controls don’t have enough contrast in some areas.
  14. The back to top button only moves the page view, not the keyboard focus.
  15. The visible focus indicator (which helps keyboard users to keep track of where they are on web pages) is missing on some text fields.
  16. There’s no visible focus indicator for images in embedded X (formerly known as Twitter) posts.
  17. The cookie settings button is ‘stuck’ to the page and sometimes blocks parts of the page from view.
  18. Slider controls have names that aren’t descriptive of their purpose. The current slider value doesn’t update.
  19. The way the keyboard navigates through the tab panels can be improved and made clearer.
  20. When dropdown links are expanded or collapsed in the main menu, this isn’t conveyed to screen readers.

We’re actively working on resolving the accessibility problems on the Girlguiding website. This statement will be updated in future as we make progress.

How we review accessibility on our website

The Girlguiding website is periodically reviewed for accessibility. This was last done by Nomensa, an external 3rd party company, in July 2024.

Nomensa evaluated the Girlguiding website against a set of standards, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), and reported on their findings. This was done by testing with both human users and automated technology. The testing included the use of assistive technologies like screen readers.

Girlguiding is determined to use the findings from these evaluations to improve accessibility on the Girlguiding website.
