Top tips for your next adventure with PGL

To help girls have more adventure, our partner PGL offers great opportunities for trips in the UK

28 January 2020
It was good to spend time with the girls and watch them (and join in) doing the activities and see their reactions and development. It gave us time to get to know them better without having to be organising the next event. - 1st Efail Isaf Brownies and Guides.

To help girls have more adventure, our partner PGL offers great opportunities to take girls away in the UK. We’ve pulled together some hints and tips on what to do.

Going Away With Licence

To go away with PGL you need to hold Modules 1-4 of the Going Away With Licence, or be working towards it. If you want to take girls to PGL and don’t hold the licence, speak with your commissioner about starting the scheme.

What you need to do before the trip?

PGL venues are approved by Girlguiding but you’ll still have to follow our processes, the same as any other Girlguiding residential. This includes completing the Residential Event Notification form, consent and health forms, risk assessments and home contacts.

You’ll also need to make sure you have the right adult-to-child ratios with the correct DBS checks and the right A Safe Space training for your leadership team.

PGL have sample itineraries and risk assessments to help you, and a sample letter you can adapt for parents. You can use their PowerPoint presentation for parents’ meetings and they have virtual tours, menus and packing lists online.

PGL will provide you with information on what they require before the residential.

Insurance

PGL insurance is included in the cost of the residential. If you’re arranging your own transport, you’ll need to have the appropriate insurance for that. PGL can do this for you. Our insurance pages tell you what the Girlguiding insurance will cover.

Travel

PGL can organise your travel, or you can make your own travel plans.

Never been to PGL?

New leaders and their families (partner and two children) can go on a free preview visit to check out what it’s like.

What happens when you arrive?

PGL can plan your itinerary - just let them know what activities your unit wants to try and they'll send you a planned programme before your visit. They'll also take care of running activities, evening entertainment, getting to activities and leading your evening activities.

As part of the leadership team, you can relax more and enjoy the experience with the girls. You’ll also get the chance to gain some new ideas and songs!
