Pudsey Bear, Lioness Katie Zelem and Girlguiding members in spot-kick fundraiser

7 November 2023

Girlguiding ambassador Katie Zelem joined Brownies, Guides and Rangers for a sponsored spot-kick challenge last night in Manchester, to raise vital funds for this year’s BBC Children in Need appeal and Girlguiding.

Ahead of the television appeal night on 17 November, Pudsey Bear took on the England midfielder, girls from 1st Bramhall Brownies and Guides, and Rangers from across Girlguiding Stockport in a sponsored spot-kick challenge on Monday 6 November at Fives Trafford in Manchester. The girls with Pudsey bear in goal each took turns to score from the penalty, corner and free kick positions with support and encouragement from Katie.

Katie Zelem, Girlguiding ambassador said: “As Girlguiding ambassador, and former member, it’s really important for me to show girls they can do anything and inspire the next generation of women footballers.

“It’s been so much fun taking part in the spot-kick challenge  and helping to raise vital money for Girlguiding and BBC Children in Need. Both organisations do amazing work to make a difference to young people across the UK.

“There’s still time to get involved and your donation will help us be there for the UK’s young people, supporting them to thrive, and enable more girls to experience the adventures, fun and friendship that Girlguiding has to offer.”

Hollie, 10,  from 1st Bramhall Guides said: “Katie’s really good at football, I want to be just like her. It’s important to try new things because you never know if you’ll be really good at it. It’s been great to raise money to help other people while doing something I love.”

Claire, Hoyle, Director of Income, Marketing & Communications at BBC Children in Need spokesperson said: “This is the fourth year of our partnership with Girlguiding and each year Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers always raise the bar with their fundraising challenges! We’re asking fundraisers up and down the country to do something Spotacular to raise money this year so the Spot-Kick challenge couldn’t be more perfect! The money that is raised will go on to make a difference to children and young people who need our support most. A big thank you to everyone getting involved!”

The sponsored spot-kick challenge is just one of many activities taking place in Manchester and across the UK to fundraise for BBC Children in Need and Girlguiding.

Now in the fourth year of partnership, the annual joint fundraising campaign is a firm favourite in Girlguiding calendars and is set to follow the success of previous years in raising much needed funds to help empower the lives of young people.

This year the charity is asking its members aged 4 to 18 years – which include Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, and volunteers – to push themselves and take on a fundraising challenge or activity they’ve never done before.

All money raised will be split equally between BBC Children in Need and Girlguiding and will go on to make a difference to young lives across the UK. *
