I won a competition to go to Activity Centre Foxlease

When Ruth spotted a competition on Facebook to go to one of our Activity Centres, Foxlease, she never thought she'd win!

To thank the players of People's Postcode Lottery for their continued support of Girlguiding we offered them the chance to experience guiding first-hand, with a competition to spend a weekend at one of our Activity Centres. Winner, Leader Ruth Powell, tells us how it happened.

I never thought I'd win

I entered the competition on a complete whim.

I saw the advert, and clicked on it as Girlguiding is an organisation that I trust.

It’s the sort of thing you just forget about, so I was genuinely surprised when I got the call to say I’d won. I was really pleased, as despite being in guiding since I was a Brownie, I have never stayed at one of the Activity Centres.

Relaxing and making friends at Foxlease

I loved the weekend. So much so that I went back and asked the girls in my units - the 2nd Stockingford (St Paul's) Guides and Arbury Senior Section - whether they wanted to go to Wellies and Wristbands!

I took my best friend along with me. She was a Guide at the same time as me, in the same area, but not the same unit – so we grew up going on camps together! She’s not in guiding now, so she was a little concerned about not fitting in with the other groups on the weekend, however she couldn't have been more wrong.

A chance to explore

My favourite part of the weekend was when my friend and I decided to do a self-guided tour of the house. We went right up into the attic, and visited the library and archives. It’s been a guiding house almost since guiding’s conception.

I’d recommend a trip to Foxlease

I would highly recommend the themed weekends either on your own, with a friend or a group, as within half an hour you will have new friends.

I found going to Foxlease really relaxing. If you wanted to go and come back you could – there was no pressure to join in with everything.
