We're looking for an assistant chief guide
Join our chief guide team and work to engage, support and listen to our volunteers and inspire our girls
An exciting opportunity to join the team and help more volunteers
We're looking for a second assistant chief guide to join the chief guide team. In this role you'll work alongside the deputy chief guide and our existing assistant chief guide to support the chief guide in her role as our most senior volunteer.
This is a big role in the volunteer leadership at Girlguiding. You will play a crucial role in making sure that volunteers across the organisation have a rewarding experience. And you'll be a role model to all girls in guiding.
About the role
As assistant chief guide you'll be supporting the chief guide on a range of projects and initiatives to make sure that volunteers on the ground are supported in their role.
Areas you focus on will include:
- Our policies, procedures and administrative systems.
- Our learning and development offer.
- How we thank and recognise adult members.
- How we put our diversity and inclusion strategic plan into practice.
You 'll be managing the lead volunteers working on these areas and working in partnership with Girlguiding staff, taking part in project and programme board, committees and working groups.
You'll also act as an ambassador for Girlguiding, attending meetings and events and contributing to how we talk about ourselves to different stakeholders.
It's also a great chance for you to:
- Use and develop your leadership skills.
- Meet and work with lots of different people, building your network and expanding your knowledge and experiences.
- Get experience of working in a senior role within a large organisation, including sitting on governance boards and working groups.
- Thinking strategically and shape new plans, projects and programmes for the organisation.
- Strengthen your skills and confidence in managing and developing people, and in influencing and negotiating with others.
What's the time commitment?
The time commitment varies throughout the year. You should expect to attend regular meetings that include weekly team catch ups, 2 or 3 regular monthly meetings over video call and quarterly operational board meetings which are usually in person.
You'll also need to catch up the lead volunteers that you manage and other key staff and volunteers as relevant, and to deal with emails and other queries in the usual course of a week. You may also represent the chief guide team at weekend or evening events sometimes – this could be in person or online.
You will be working in a team that does work flexibly to support each other. And we will talk at the interview stage about what time you can offer and how that might fit with the role.
Who can apply?
Any member over the age of 18 who meets the person specification can apply.
We're looking for a volunteer who is positive, empathetic and collaborative and can quickly fit into an established and effective team.
You'll be proactive and work with senior staff and lead volunteers to help keep delivery on track in your areas of responsibility, while being inclusive and supportive of all team members. When things don’t go to plan, you'll focus on finding solutions and ways forward, thinking creatively, but also being pragmatic about resource and other limitations.
You'll also be able to communicate positively about your work areas with the wider membership and explain why decisions have been taken, even when this might not be well-received.
You'll also be able to look at the bigger picture, beyond your own work areas, and always think about what's best for our young members. You’ll be a passionate advocate for Girlguiding and the amazing things that girls, young women and our volunteers do every day.
