About Girlguiding subscriptions

A message from the Girlguiding leadership team for members, parents and carers of young member on the latest subs announcement

18 October 2021

Joint statement from Chair of the Board of Trustees Catherine Irwin, Chief Guide Amanda Medler and CEO Angela Salt.

Girlguiding’s members, volunteers, staff and supporters have together embraced the challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic in true guiding spirit. From navigating the varying restrictions needed to keep our members safe, to grasping the world of virtual guiding with both hands – everything we did was to make sure girls and young women could continue to meet together.

Every week, our remarkable volunteers provided a much-needed break from the uncertainty of the pandemic and home schooling - giving girls, and our volunteers, a space to talk, have fun and learn new things (and continue to achieve millions of badges!).

Our mission as an organisation is to provide girls with these opportunities so they can thrive, grow and give back to their communities. Our priority as the leadership team, and that of the board of trustees throughout this pandemic, as always, has also been to make sure guiding is safe for girls and volunteers; that we continue providing a quality offer for members; and to ensure we can be sustainable for the future. We want to continue to support our volunteers and be here for more girls at a time when they need us more than ever – and long into the future.

Each year Girlguiding reviews its annual subscriptions. This year, the board of trustees has agreed an increase to membership subscriptions over the next two years - as set out in our communications to our members today. Girlguiding still remains great value for money for girls and young women when we’re compared to many other activities.

This increase is essential and unavoidable to uphold our high standards of safety, and those regulatory standards expected of us as a youth organisation of our size. Despite the savings we’ve already made, and the support we have received from funders, we need to do more to ensure we’re a financially sustainable organisation.

We know the challenges are not over. As we join society in this new phase of steady recovery, we are confident in Girlguiding’s future where we can support all our existing volunteers, and welcome new ones, so that our young members can enjoy the best that guiding has to offer.

Thank you to our incredible volunteers for your continued support and commitment to ensuring our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers can once again enjoy making friends, trying new things and creating memories to last a lifetime.

Seeing our young members enjoying their weekly unit meetings face to face once more is what drives and motivates us to do our best for this organisation. The future for Girlguiding is full of potential and we believe we have never been more needed. We are determined and excited to move towards recovery together.
