Amy Madden
Can you describe your Girlguiding journey from the beginning to now?
'I first made my promise at the age of 7 as a Brownie - no front teeth and full of enthusiasm. I went on to Guides and it was there that a life in navy blue became my destiny. The opportunities I had to lead, learn, explore and be myself were truly inspiring. I want others to experience that same journey as they get to know themselves and find their place in the world.
At 18, I started as a unit helper, continued this through university and never stopped. Now, living in Guernsey, I’m a unit leader and have done all sorts in addition, from outdoor activities advisor to Guide adviser and now adventure lead volunteer!'
Why did you want to apply for this role?
'It was a bit spur-of-the-moment and totally unplanned! I saw the role advertised and it sounded really interesting, though I wasn’t sure if I’d be the right person for the job. I put together my application, thinking it’d be good experience just to go through the process - an interview would be a bonus and it’d be fun to meet people and network a little.
Things progressed and by the end of the second interview I was waiting with bated breath. I realised this was a role I could really contribute to, and I genuinely wanted to be part of the team.'
Adventures teach resilience, adaptability, creative thinking - and best of all, they’re fun.'
What does adventure mean to you?
'Adventure means something different to everyone, but for me it’s anything fun that gives you a new perspective. That could mean experiencing something for the first time, going higher, further or faster than before or simply seeing the world in a new way.'
What do you hope you can do in this role?
'I want everyone to be able to enjoy and experience adventure. During my time I hope to help grow what we offer through Girlguiding; whether that’s by increasing the number of girls, making it easier for leaders to bring adventure to their units or breaking down some of the barriers that limit what’s possible.'
I’m really excited to part of a team of volunteers and staff who are so passionate about the subject and I’m looking forward to the adventures we’re going to have together.'
How important is adventure as a part of a girl’s experience of Girlguiding?
'I think adventure is what sets Girlguiding apart. It’s an essential part of every girl's experience with us. We provide a safe, supportive space where girls feel confident stepping outside their comfort zone, with their leaders there to support and guide them as they try something new.
The benefits of adventure are as varied and diverse as the adventures themselves! When we offer adventure to girls, they gain new perspectives and have a chance to try things in different ways. Shared adventures help build deeper connections and when we work together it broadens our horizons so we begin to see the world through different eyes.
There is no judgement in adventure - no exam grades, no report card. It encourages personal reflection and growth, and that’s incredibly powerful.'
