Camping in any season
We look at how to make the most of your outdoor adventures all year round
As the weather yo-yo’s from warm to cold and we look forward to April showers leading us into summer, we’ve put together a seasonal camping checklist with our partners GO Outdoors.
Camping is a Girlguiding staple and it’s an activity that can be enjoyed all year round. With these top tips you don’t need to let the weather stop you as you and your unit work towards their camp skills builder badges.
GO Outdoors are proud to sponsor all 6 stages of our camp skills builder – and offer our members a special discount of at least 10% on camping equipment and more.
As we spring into the most changeable season of all, let’s look at how you can conquer camping whatever the weather.
Spring camping
In spring everything starts waking up and starting to flower making it an inviting season to camp. But unpredictable rain showers and lingering cold can be challenging. Here are some tricks to make sure your spring camping is as enjoyable and fun as it can be:
- Be prepared for rain: spring showers are common across the UK, so always pack a waterproof jacket, tarps and, if you can, make sure your tent has a rainfly.
- Mind the bugs: as the weather warms, insects start to emerge. Remember to pack insect repellent and consider a tent with a bug net.
- Pack for temperature swings: spring can be warm during the day, but the temperature can drop drastically at night. Layered clothing is essential to adjust to changing temperatures.
- Check conditions underfoot: residual frost and spring rain can make for muddy or water logged camping grounds. Before your trip, check conditions at your camp and plan accordingly.
Summer camping
Whether its guide camp, or a trip away with your fellow leaders, summer is the peak camping season for many. With its long sunny days and warm nights, it can be the perfect time to spend a night under the stars. But it’s also the time when campsites are busiest and temperatures can get very warm. Here’s how to have a safe and comfortable summer camping experience:
- Stay hydrated: being out in the sun all day can be intense, so make sure you pack water bottles and that you and your girls drink regularly to stay hydrated.
- Seek shade: if you’re in a camping area with little natural shade, bring an umbrella or canopy. During peak sun hours try to stay in shaded areas or wear hats and sun glasses to protect against the sun.
- Protect against sunburn: we know the sun’s rays are strongest during summer. Remind your girls to pack sunscreen and sunglasses and consider lightweight long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin.
- Choose breathable clothing: lightweight, moisture-wicking materials will keep you cooler in the summer heat.
Autumn camping
Autumn can be a beautiful time to go camping, with cooler temperatures and colourful foliage. But it can also be unpredictable, with sudden changes in weather. Here are some tips to help you to fully enjoy your autumn camping trip:
- Dress in layers: in autumn temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day, so it’s important to dress in layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.
- Bring warm bedding: nights can be chilly in autumn, so make sure you have warm bedding, such as a thick sleeping bag or extra blankets.
- Pack waterproof gear: autumn weather is often wet, so pack your waterproof gear, such as a rain jacket and waterproof boots.
- Bring a hot water bottle: a hot water bottle can help keep you warm at night and is a great way to soothe sore muscles after a day of camping fun.
Winter camping
Winter camping can be magical, especially if it snows! But it can also be challenging, with cold temperatures and inclement weather. Here are some tips to help you and your unit stay warm and comfy during your winter camping trip:
- Dress in warm, waterproof clothing: Layer up with warm, waterproof clothing, including a hat, gloves, and insulated boots. For a top tip, store your footwear inside your tent to keep your feet dry and comfortable.
- Ventilate your tent: ventilating your tent space properly during the day will help to keep condensation away, especially as you dry off damp socks and clothes inside.
- Set up camp while it’s still light: not only can you see what you’re doing, but the temperature is a bit warmer during the day, so setting up will be more efficient and enjoyable.
- Pack waterproof matches: in case your lighter or fire starter fails, pack waterproof matches to ensure you can start a fire to help keep you warm.
