A safe space level 3

How you recognise signs of abuse and how you respond to allegations, disclosures or concerns

Page last updated: 6 June 2023

Level 3 must be completed by mentors, advisers, coordinators (except GO coordinators), licence holders on residentials, trainers, tutors, anyone leading a team of adults, and those doing level 4. As well as at least 1 leader per unit (leader, assistant leader, leader in training) must have an in-date level 3. But we recommend that all leaders complete it.

Don't forget you'll also need to complete levels 1 and 2.

Everyone needs to have the correct level of a safe space training for their role. You may have your membership withdrawn if you don’t complete the levels you need. Find out what happens if you haven't completed your training. We recommend that all leaders, assistant leaders and leaders in training complete level 3, but it’s not a mandatory requirement. If you’re working on the leader development programme, you’ll need to have level 3 to have the role of leader added.

You’ll learn about

  • What to do if someone tells you about a concern, allegation or disclosure.
  • How to recognise there is a concern.
  • How you can support and help someone tell their story safely.
  • How to take action and with whom.
  • Where to get help.

How long does it take?

  • An in-person training session takes 3 to 3.5 hours and can be face-to-face or as webinar. You can find a list of session dates on the learning platform. Or ask your commissioner or country or region office for details next one is.
  • If you’re renewing your level 3 you can now complete a renewal e-learning course, you can only access this course if your level 3 is currently in-date, if its expired you’ll need to complete the full training session. This takes 30-45 minutes.

Answering your questions

Volunteers can access this on the learning platform. If they’re eligible to complete it, it’ll be shown as an option for them to complete.

Until you’ve completed the course it’ll show as not completed. We can’t stop the compliance emails in case, for whatever reason, the webinar doesn’t go ahead, or you don’t complete the online course.

Currently, individual leader roles don’t have level 3 as being required. However, each unit must have at least 1 leader with level 3 at their meetings. It's recommended that as many leaders in that unit do the course, so that they’re covered if the leader with level 3 can’t make the meeting.
