Girlguiding brings back iconic 90s uniform
19 May 2025
35 years on from the original launch of Girlguiding’s first ‘mix and match’ uniform designed by fashion designer Jeff Banks, the organisation has launched a special- edition 90s Brownie and Guide adult-size range
In a nostalgic nod to one of the most memorable fashion eras, Girlguiding has today announced it will be bringing back iconic 90s uniform staples originally designed by British fashion designer Jeff Banks, for a limited adult’s only casual wear run.
Brits growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s will remember the legendary uniform range, with its famous brown culottes and yellow and brown Brownie jumper, with its distinguishable Girlguiding trefoil and typography splashed across the front.
For many, this special-edition, adults-only collection will be more than just a fashion comeback. Inviting those you grew up in the 90s to relive their guiding days and celebrate the style that defined a generation.
With around 1 in 3 women in the UK(1) once part of Girlguiding having been a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide or Ranger during their childhood, this throwback won’t just be a trend, but a shared memory for millions.
Those wanting to celebrate their time in guiding or simply just reminisce in 90s nostalgia will be able to choose between the iconic Brownies Sweatshirt, Brownies t-shirt, Guides hoodie and Guides t-shirt.
The iconic Girlguiding uniform, launched in 1990, quickly became synonymous with the organisation throughout the following decade. Its creation was the result of a collaborative effort, including a design by Jeff Banks, who volunteered his services, calling it his privilege and pleasure to be involved. The design process also included input from a nationwide competition and a mass consultation involving over 10,000 Girlguiding units. The new uniform made its debut as part of a catwalk presentation on the BBC’s Clothes Show, marking a stylish and memorable introduction.
Girlguiding ambassador, broadcaster Ashley James said:
The nineties was such a great time - girl bands, friendship bracelets, lava lamps and for me personally, and so many other girls, being in Rainbows and Brownies. That’s definitely where I had so much confidence instilled in me. I’m so passionate about Girlguiding and everything they’re doing to support girls and young women.
“These nineties T-shirts and hoodies are now available but they're a special- edition so get them before they’re gone!"
In addition to the limited-throwback range, Girlguiding will also be releasing a new 90s themed retro badge and 90s inspired activities for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers so young members can join in the nostalgic fun
The special-edition range will be available to purchase from 19 May in sizes 6 to 32 from the Girlguiding online shop.
