Finding quiet adventure activities
We discover quiet adventures in 'Adventure for girls' to help achieve adventure badges
Quiet adventures can be found all over Girlguiding.
Across our 5 adventure categories - height, land, snow, sport and water - you shared some amazing examples with us earlier in the year which we’ve highlighted below. And you inspired us to dig out some examples of quiet adventures from our adventure activity finder, Adventure for girls.
Whether it’s stargazing with your unit, exploring your local community or staging your own sports day, adventure is everywhere. And you and your girls can experience it and gain badges anywhere and in any way.
Take a look at the quiet adventure activities we’ve highlighted and let us know your favourites.
Height
Stargazing
Expand your girls’ horizons with a stargazing session. Imagine that you’re floating way above the world and spot the stars that would be right next to you. Check out our top tips for stargazing and you’ll be ready to fly.
Adventure Playground
Head to your local playground and tackle the monkey bars, spiderwebs, slides and swings to reach new heights with your girls. Whether it’s swinging higher than ever before or conquering the bars in record time, it’s a great way for everyone to achieve their height badge.
Snow
Frosty walks
As soon as it gets cold enough, take your girls on a frosty walk and see how the world looks completely different. With cloudy breath, crispy grass and melting snowflakes, it’s an adventure to an alien world.
Snow art
Do you want to build a snowman? If you don’t fancy tobogganing, you could create some snow art or make snow angels. And don’t worry if it doesn’t snow this year – you can create sculptures out of ice cubes or frozen water balloons to help your girls get their snow badge.
Land
Walking in easy and lowland countryside
Whether it’s in urban locations and local parks or country tracks and lanes, exploring your local terrain can be an incredible adventure. Help your girls to find their inner explorer and discover plants, wildlife and sights you’ve never seen before as you travel on foot.
Community exploring
How well do you know your local area and the services that serve it? Take your girls out into the community and explore the area you live in. Many groups welcome units and show them around. You could visit your local fire station and have a go with the hose or see even what it's like in a police cell.
Sport
Mini Olypmics
Fresh from this year’s incredible summer of sport, why not host your own Games with your girls? All you need is space either indoors or out, some games, and some willing competitors. Make prizes for the girls to give each other and celebrate everyone’s achievements whilst having fun.
Breaking
Breaking, or break dancing, is a style of street dance, involving acrobatic moves and complex footwork. Learn the moves from YouTube videos and try them out with your girls. Breaking can be done anywhere, so get ready to pop, lock and roll!
Water
Paddling in open water
Take your socks and shoes off, and feel the thrill of cool (or let’s be honest, cold!) water on your feet. It could be in the sea or on the banks of a local river. Wherever you do it, paddling is a great way to quietly take the plunge.
Stone skipping
Did you know that the world record for number of skips is 88?! Find the perfect stones with your girls and see how many skips you can get. Maybe there’s a new world champion in your unit!
Your quiet adventures
When we launched our quiet adventure series on social we were thrilled to see so many superb examples in the comments and we wanted to share them as widely as possible. Check out the full Facebook post or get a flavour from some that we've quoted below.
Please continue to share your amazing stories and we’ll continue to shine a light on your brilliant adventures.
We had a walk to our local 'duck pond' which is in the grounds of our local business park (they encourage local people to use the area). We fed the ducks, then got rained on! Fortunately they have cover and seats so we sat and drew what we saw, parents joined us at the end for badges. Not quiet but certainly exploring the local area.'

The last meeting of term for 2nd Rustington Brownies was an evening on the beach creating sand art and giant trefoils in their sixes, the activities being planned and led by 2 Brownies for their Gold Award challenge. It rained for the last half of the meeting but we were all prepared and continued regardless. A great 'quiet' adventure, just a bit wet!'
- Michelle
We did a litter pick round the village ending up at the local dairy farm where they make their own ice cream. Eating locally made ice cream in the summer rain is a British tradition right?'
- Nicola
Our units love "quiet" (not so quiet!) adventures and the best part is they can take place ANYWHERE! Endless possibilities to get our girls out embracing nature.'
- Louisa
2nd Littlehampton Guides often go on quiet adventures, we go to the beach, the woods we even did a heritage trail through town in the dark.'

We made kites with our Brownies and then the following week went to fly them at Dunstable Downs to complete our aviation badge. It was a wonderful chilled evening.'
