Deputy chief guide Sally Kettle on Cityscapes Adventure
Celebrating inspiring women from our 5 wide-game cities
Next March, girls from all sections and volunteers across the UK will be stepping out for a big city adventure as Cityscapes Adventure arrives in Portsmouth, Cardiff, Manchester, Glasgow, and York.
On 21 and 22 March for just £10 a ticket, Cityscapes Adventure offers an unforgettable day out. Take part in a wide game that takes girls and their leaders through the heart of each city, solving clues, taking on challenges, and discovering hidden stories along the way. It’s a brilliant mix of exploration, teamwork, and fun. Tickets are on sale until 19 January 2026, so don’t miss out!
As Deputy Chief Guide, I love events like this because they bring to life so many of the things we stand for in Girlguiding — confidence, curiosity, friendship, and having the courage to try something new. Whether it’s your first time in a big city or your 10th guiding adventure, Cityscapes Adventure will leave you buzzing with energy and ideas.
And of course, each city has its own story to tell and its own inspiring women who’ve shaped the world around them. Here are some from each Cityscapes Adventure city that have inspired me…
Inspirational women
Portsmouth – Mary Ellis (1917–2018)
A Second World War pilot who flew over 1,000 aircraft, including Spitfires, Mary Ellis defied expectations and proved that skill and determination know no limits. Her courage reminds us that bravery comes in many forms, sometimes it’s just taking the controls and believing you can fly.
Cardiff – Dame Shirley Bassey (born 1937)
From Tiger Bay to global fame, Shirley Bassey’s story is one of resilience and self-belief. With her unmistakable voice and presence, she showed that talent paired with hard work can take you anywhere, a perfect reminder for every girl dreaming big.
Manchester – Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928)
A true changemaker, Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Suffragette movement and helped win women the right to vote. Her passion for equality still inspires us to speak up, take action, and lead with purpose, which is something every Girlguiding member knows a bit about!
Glasgow – Nicola Benedetti (born 1987)
An award-winning violinist and champion of music education, Nicola Benedetti shows how creativity can change lives. Through her talent and leadership, she’s helping young people everywhere discover their own voices, something we also strive to do in guiding.
York – Anne Lister (1791–1840)
The remarkable Anne Lister — landowner, traveller, and diarist — lived boldly and unapologetically, defying the expectations of her time. Her story reminds us of the power of authenticity and the importance of being true to who we are.
