Assistant chief guide Mhairi Mackay dives into guiding
Back to guiding and back to fun!
After weeks of sunshine and far too many ice creams, we’re swapping flip-flops for neckers and diving back into guiding!
It’s time for games, giggles, and even a brand new badge or 2.
I don’t know about you, but I love getting going at the start of the year. There’s something magical about catching up with familiar faces, welcoming new ones, and starting fresh with a clean slate (and hopefully a tidy craft cupboard… though let’s be honest, there’s always something out of place!). It feels like the first page of a new adventure, ready to be filled with stories, songs, and probably a few burnt marshmallows along the way.
Speaking of adventures, did you hear about the new interest badges? They launched over the summer and they’re looking fabulous. They give girls even more choice to explore what excites them – from practical skills to creative challenges, there’s something for everyone. Why not set a fun challenge – who can be the first in your unit to complete one this term? Bragging rights (and maybe extra biscuits) included.
Of course, before we get lost in the fun, it’s also about doing those little jobs that help everything run smoothly. It’s about taking a moment to update risk assessments, just in case anything’s changed at your meeting place over the holidays. Giving your first aid kit a check – those plasters have a sneaky habit of disappearing. And sitting down with your leadership team, preferably over a strong cup of tea, to catch up and make sure everyone’s on the same page with plans for the term. It’s amazing how a quick chat can spark brilliant new ideas.
As for me, I had a real treat over the summer – the chief guide team all visited the National Guide and Scout Symphony Orchestra and Concert Band in Birmingham. What an experience! The music was stunning, and I was blown away by the sheer talent and teamwork on display. Watching young people perform at that level was inspiring, and it reminded me so much of what guiding is all about: learning new skills, working together, and having the confidence to share them proudly.
So, as we get going with another year of guiding, let’s bring all that energy, creativity and joy into our meetings. Here’s to a term full of laughter, new challenges, and plenty of moments that the girls will remember long after term has ended. Whether that’s conquering a campfire song, nailing a badge skill, or simply enjoying being part of something special together, thank you for everything you’re doing this term and beyond.
