Become a Period Proud Peer

Girls aged 13-19 can sign up to help break down stigma around periods

We've teamed up with Plan International UK to bring their Period Peers Programme to Guide and Ranger units.

Periods are a normal part of life, yet stigma still surrounds them. Many young people feel unsure, embarrassed, or left out of conversations about periods.

As a result, lots of girls and young people don’t get the information or support they need to feel confident managing their periods or speaking about them openly.

What is the Period Peers Programme?

The Period Peers Programme helps young people learn more about periods and feel confident talking about them.

Young people can volunteer to become Period Proud Peers. Their role is to lead fun, friendly period-related activities with others in their unit – helping to break down stigma and build confidence.

Who can be a Period Proud Peer?

Any member aged 13–19 can get involved. This might include:

  • A young leader in a Guide unit.
  • 1 or 2 Rangers leading activities for the rest of their unit.
  • Older Guides (13+), if the unit doesn’t have young leaders.

Every Period Proud Peer receives a handbook with everything they need to plan and run the activities!

What do the activities look like?

There are 5 activities in the handbook. Period Proud Peers choose 3 to run. They can either:

  • Run all 3 in 1 evening (about 30 mins each), or
  • Spread them across a couple of meetings if the group wants more time to explore the topic.

The activities are fun and practical, ranging from making period bracelets to learning about different period products.

What happens afterwards?

At the end of the activities, the unit will be asked to complete a short, anonymous survey from Plan International UK. This can be done:

  • Online, individually, by scanning a QR code in the letter that comes with the handbook, or
  • On paper, as a group, by completing a paper form and then inputting the data into an online form.

This helps us understand how well the programme is working. After completing the activities and the survey, everyone who took part will receive an exclusive Period Proud Peer badge!

Units are also encouraged to do something fun to continue the conversation - like hosting a 'period party' or an event in their local community.

Create a Period Proud environment

A Period Proud environment is somewhere that supports girls and young people to manage their periods with confidence, and reduces period shame and stigma. As part of the programme, you’ll receive a checklist with ideas to help your unit create a supportive atmosphere.

We’d love to know what you get up to – please send any photos, stories, or feedback to [email protected].
