Outdoor adventures with PGL
Inspiring girls to dream big and explore the world with confidence
Like our partners in adventure, PGL, we believe adventure is more than just an activity - it's an attitude. Adventure can be big or small but it’s always about stepping into a space where you feel brave.
Adventure is about trying something challenging, exhilarating, or new. And sometimes it's about getting outdoors and exploring the amazing world around us.
Why girls need adventure
At Girlguiding, we know that adventure helps form friendships and develops confidence. It also rewards exploration, discovery and daring.
Many of our amazing volunteers feel confident in leading outdoor adventures and going away on residentials. But we know that it can feel like a lot to take on for some leaders too and that all leaders live busy lives outside of their commitment to Girlguiding.
At PGL you can lead outdoor adventures where everything is taken care of, including planning and leading the activities. And if you’re staying overnight, all the cooking and washing up will be done for you!
So, as you look to plan your adventures for the next term and next year, we’ve partnered with PGL leaders, to find out what makes for a great outdoor adventure.
The secret to a good outdoor adventure
- Dare to try something new. Encourage girls to be explorers. At PGL centres, every space is a safe space so let them run wild. It could be orienteering in unexplored woods, discovering wildlife under logs and in ponds, or even trying a new skill, such as survival practice. Tackling something new will stimulate their curiosity and imagination. For some, spending their first night away from family is a huge adventure in itself!
- Encourage acts of bravery. On a trip away a moment of bravery, no matter how small, can leave a lasting impact. It could be facing a fear of heights on the abseil tower, staying overnight in a new place, standing up and talking in front of your friends, or taking that first step into a canoe when you’re afraid of falling in. We know these little moments of bravery build self-esteem, character and help girls to develop confidence which they can take into the future.
- Reaching new heights. At PGL girls get to try a host of outdoor adventure activities that help them reach new heights, including climbing, abseiling, big swing and more. They get to grow their teamwork skills, resilience and problem-solving abilities all while having fun and earning their height adventure badge! Experiencing success in these activities will make your girls believe they can achieve anything.
- Create opportunities for bonding. As all Girlguiding leaders know, sharing outdoor adventures as a unit brings girls closer together. The teamwork, the cheers of encouragement and the unforgettable moments strengthen friendships for years to come. For additional bonding time, not much can top toasting marshmallows, singing campfire songs including Campfires Burning, Crazy Moose and The Penguin Song, and sharing stories after a long day of fun.
- Let them get dirty. Dirt is temporary, but the memories last forever. Every muddy boot, grass-stain and tangled hair tells a story of an outdoor adventure well done. Let your girls climb, dig, jump and splash to their hearts’ content. On a PGL residential weekend you don’t need to worry about managing food, tents and kit, or the washing up!
- Safety first, always. We know adventure must be safe for all. At PGL, instructors always prioritise the wellbeing of everyone under your care. Once you’ve completed Girlguiding procedures for your activities and nights away, PGL will make sure that everyone is kept safe whilst having incredible fun.
