Meet the 2024 Roverway team

Introducing the incredible volunteers who are managing our contingent

19 July 2024

Jointly hosted by WOSM (World Organisation of the Scout Movement) and WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts), Roverway 2024 takes place in Norway between 22 July and 1 August.

The Girlguiding contingent for the event is managed by an incredible set of volunteers, the CMT (Contingent Management Team). We wanted to introduce these amazing leaders who are working together to offer this life changing experience for members of Girlguiding.

Find out how you can take part in international adventures as a leader.

Nicola Candlish, head of contingent

Nicola Candlish, head of contingent

'Hi everyone, I’m Nicola! I’m head of contingent for Roverway 2024.

I'm passionate about giving Rangers and young adults the best possible experience and opportunity in Girlguiding. I like to think outside the box and break conventions.

As county Ranger adviser I started Middlesex East Rangers, a totally flexible unit offering events, overnights, camps and internationals.

Being part of WAGGGS is really special. I love being part of something that empowers women worldwide.

I love travelling with Girlguiding, especially with extra challenges. When our flights to Switzerland were cancelled, we rearranged plans overnight. That crazy journey is one of my favourite Guiding experiences. It taught me that whatever happens, there's always a way to deal with it.'

I’m really excited to learn how Norwegian Scouting works, and to try new food while making new friends. I love to see the real culture, rather than the holiday brochure.'

A random fact about me…

'I used to work in theatre and have an Olivier Award.'

Suzie Moody, specialist volunteer for large scale and international events

Suzie Moody, specialist volunteer for large scale and international events

'Hi, I'm Suzie from Leeds!

My role is very much to support the CMT in their journey to Roverway, which in turn supports all our Girlguiding members taking part in the event.

I've been a Girlguiding leader for 22 years and in the last 10 have really enjoyed supporting and leading Internationals to places like the Great Wall of China, Peru and most recently Eurojam.

WAGGGS is like one giant family, where we learn so much from each other.

I’ve been lucky enough to be part of many international adventures, all helping me out of my comfort zone and learning more about myself and those around me.

I'm most excited to see everyone in Roverway come together. Knowing its Norway just fills me with excitement for everyone involved as I know it’s going to be once in a lifetime stuff!'

A random fact about me…

'I love baking!'

Ravi Pooni, social media and comms lead

'Hi, I’m Ravi! I’ll be posting a lot of content on our social media platforms before and during Roverway.

In Girlguiding, I’m a Guide and Ranger leader in Oldbury, West Mercia and I’m also a member of Smethwick Trefoil Guild. I went on an international trip with Trefoil Guild to Thailand in November 2023. This experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I loved every moment of it!

I’m most excited to meet Guides and Scouts from all over Europe and to meet new people and share our experiences. Being a part of WAGGGS makes me proud to be a member of Girlguiding.

WAGGGS opportunities are special because they bring so many people together from different countries and being a part of that is an incredible feeling.'

A random fact about me…

'In a Walkers promotion, I once found £10 in a packet of cheese and onion crisps!'

Charlie Mackie, patrols: region and country pastoral support

'Hi, I’m Charlie! I’ll be working with regions and countries to support their patrols, and with the participants to make sure they have a brilliant time.

I’m a Brown Owl, and the international advisor, from Worcestershire. I love travelling, pack holidays, camping and despite my inability to carry a tune, I love singing campfire songs!

The part of Roverway I’m most excited about is when everyone comes together and shares all the amazing adventures they’ve had from their different paths. I also can’t wait to swap some badges.

WAGGGS brings people together from all over the world, it doesn’t matter what we look like, where we are from or what religion we follow – we are all united by our love of Girlguiding and Girl Scouts.'

A random fact about me…

'So far I’ve visited 29 countries in the world! I’m aiming for 40 countries before I’m 40. I’m hoping for 3 more new countries this year.'

Margaret Duff, logistics lead and deputy head of contingent

Margaret Duff, logistics lead and deputy head of contingent

'Hi, I'm Margaret! My role includes making lots of lists and doing lots of bookings.

I've guided in Sheffield, Cambridge, Bath, and now South Oxfordshire. In guiding, I'm a Guide leader, specialist inclusion advisor, and trainer.

Guiding helps girls know that they can do anything and can have adventurous, exciting international experiences.

I joined the CMT because I want to enable more young adults to have international opportunities and develop into future leaders.

WAGGGS opportunities are special because WAGGGS is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to empowering girls and young women in the world.

My international adventures have given me the confidence to step into a room with any number of people from around the world, feeling confident in making my voice heard. I'm proud to wear my uniform, with the WAGGGS world badge.'

A random fact about me…

'I once sang 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm' with a duck glove puppet at an international camp!'

Tanya Bennett, supporting the international service team (IST)

Tanya Bennett, supporting the international service team (IST)

'Hi I'm Tanya!

I'm a Ranger leader in Marple, and have been a Guide and Rainbow leader. I’m on our county team as Ranger adviser, Queen’s Guide co-ordinator, and am on the residential team.

I worked on 2 previous World Jamborees and loved the experience - meeting new friends and working hard to make the camp work. I'm delighted to be on the Roverway CMT to make sure everyone gets the same chance.

Being part of WAGGGS opens a whole world of opportunity for girls and young women to broaden their horizons encouraging them, as Baden-Powell said, to “Look wide, and even when you think you are looking wide – look wider still.”

My international experiences have helped make me who I am today. Travel is one of my passions, so being able to support other members to travel with Girlguiding is fabulous.'

A random fact about me…

'I did the necker flip lockdown challenge on my first attempt!'

Chrissie Butcher, CMT member

Chrissie Butcher, CMT member

'Hi, I’m Chrissie and I’m the newest member of CMT!

I’m a Rainbow and Brownie leader in Newcastle and have a Guide and Ranger leader in Oxfordshire.

I’m very grateful for the international opportunities I’ve had. I’ve been to Switzerland and India with Girlguiding and am going to Iceland next year.

This has allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, embrace and explore other cultures. I have so many fantastic memories that I've shared with the next generation to hopefully inspire them to seek their own international opportunities.

I really relish going on international camps as I get the chance to join in adventurous activities, which I don’t get to do as much now I’m a Rainbow leader!'

A random fact about me…

'I enjoy making fancy dress costumes for my Christmas Day swim in the sea. My favourite fancy dress options include Aladdin's magic carpet, chocolate orange and R2D2.'
