Taking on Everest for Girlguiding
Leysan shares how she trekked to Everest base camp and fundraised for Girlguiding
We’re supported by incredible fundraisers who challenge themselves to do amazing things.
Just like Girlguiding girls, they share in the thrill of doing something new or for the first time and have experiences that leave them with lasting stories and memories.
Whatever challenge they complete, their fundraising makes a real difference to girls’ lives, helping them know they can do anything and to have many types of adventures of their own.
Looking forward, never down
Read on to hear from one of these awe-inspiring supporters. Meet Leysan, who trekked for 10 days to Everest basecamp in September and fundraised a fantastic £565 for Girlguiding.
What motivated you to take on a challenge to support Girlguiding?
I’ve seen that Girlguiding is more than just an organisation. It’s a community where girls grow, learn and thrive.
'From adventurous trips, to learning essential life skills. Passionate volunteers work really hard to create a safe and supportive environment that empowers girls to be the best they can be.'
Leysan’s daughter has been in Girlguiding for 6 years. She wanted to take on a fundraising challenge to support Girlguiding because it was really important for her to use her challenge 'as a way to encourage girls to challenge themselves, to grow into confident, capable women and help build a brighter future for the next generation'.
How did you prepare for your incredible fundraising trek to Everest base camp?
'I spent a year preparing for the trek by watching videos of others who had completed it and gathering information on weather, culture, clothing, risks, and physical exercise.'
However, what I discovered during the trek was that it wasn't just about physical fitness - it was more about mental endurance.’
There were moments during Leysan’s year of preparations when life took unexpected turns and her motivation was challenged. But the thought of making a difference to girls lives, filled her heart with 'joy and a renewed sense of purpose.’
What happened during your amazing Everest adventure?
After flying to one of the world’s most dangerous airports, Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Leysan arrived in the mountains to start her climb.
'We walked an average of 8 hours each day, with 2 acclimatisation days in between. The trek was challenging due to the limited oxygen levels. On some days, I experienced altitude sickness, making it difficult to talk or even tie my laces—every breath truly mattered! For me, each breath equalled each step.'
I never considered stopping; it was all about taking the next step and focusing on one day and one breath at a time. Maintaining a positive attitude was important. I confronted my fear of heights by crossing hanging bridges, focusing only on looking forward, never down—a metaphor for life itself.'
How do you feel after completing your extraordinary challenge?
Leysan felt a closer connection to Girlguiding, knowing that all her efforts would be helping and inspiring girls and volunteers.
'Overall, I was filled with gratitude for the journey, the lessons learned, and the amazing people I met along the way.'
Completing the trek brought me a profound sense of accomplishment and fulfilment. I felt empowered and realised I could overcome obstacles I once thought impossible. The experience boosted my confidence and reinforced my belief in my abilities.'
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about taking on a challenge, or fundraising to support Girlguiding?
- 'Set clear goals: Define what you want to achieve with your adventure or fundraising efforts. Having clear goals will keep you motivated and focused.
- Start early: Begin your preparations and fundraising efforts well in advance. This gives you plenty of time to train, raise funds, and handle any unforeseen challenges.
- Be authentic: Share your personal story and reasons for supporting the Girlguiding. Being real, open and honest resonates with people and can inspire them to contribute.'
