Adventures... by the sea
We joined 1st Skelmersdale Guides for an adventure filled day in Southport
On a blustery day by the water Tabitha, Matilda, Chloe, Hannah, Jessica and Eve took on archeology, tai chi and created sea creatures.
The girls were at an event called Adventures... by the Sea. It was hosted by North West England to celebrate International Day of the Girl, a day highlighting the needs and challenges girls face, while also celebrating and empowering them. It was part funded by our adventure fund and brought nearly 1000 girls together from across the region.
We hung out with the 1st Skelmersdale Guides and their leaders Sarah and Tess to find out about their day and discover what their individual highlights were.
A day of adventure, fun and play
A diary as told to Girlguiding adventure coordinator Rachael Dixon.
‘We came up with a plan that the girls would take turns wearing the captain's hat and when they were the captain, they would lead the way navigating the rest of the group to where we needed to be.

Our first activity session was archaeology, run by students from the University of Central Lancashire. We drew some bones, as well as modelled layers of the ground/bedrock over time using playdough. Tabitha thought this bit was really fun. We then excavated replica bones and talked through what the different bones were, which Hannah loved.

After that we made a human train and took pictures to get points for the adventures by the sea monopoly challenge. We found a sunny spot near the water for some lunch and then the seagulls found us!

After lunch we made our way to The Grand hotel for our next activity session which was tai chi. None of the girls had tried tai chi before and Tabitha had wanted to try a martial art. Our instructor was Daphne from Freshfield Fitness. She took us through some basic moves and flows and then even showed us some water themed movements for the sea-themed day.

Before our next activity we did some more challenges. We struck a pose in front of a fountain, saluted in front of a war memorial, found The Atkinson theatre and made a piece of art hugging a tree. We also did some silly things just for fun like burying Hannah under a pile of leaves. Chloe also bought a fluffy seagull and named him Jay.

To finish the day, we headed back to The Grand for our final activity session, a doodling workshop. Artist and doodler Jamie showed us how to make name tags with self-portraits on them and then talked us through how to draw some sea creatures step by step. The girls drew a jellyfish, a mackerel, a crab and an eel. For Chloe and Eve this was their favourite activity of the day.
Then tired but happy we headed home!’
