How volunteering in my community helped me feel at home
Volunteer Victoria shares how guiding helped her find her community after moving to a new city
Starting over in a new area isn't always easy.
It's great to have a routine, but it’s even better to have a group of friends to chat with at the end of the day.
When Victoria moved to Leeds, she was in that exact spot. She didn't know many people nearby. Her old friends lived in different cities, so she couldn't just pop over for a chat and a cuppa.
She remembered a friend saying that Girlguiding always needs volunteers, so she decided to give it a try. 7 years later, she’s still a part of the team!

Volunteering in my community became more than just a hobby
For Victoria, volunteering did more than just fill her evenings. It gave her a real group of friends who look out for each other.
’I love the community here,’ Victoria says. ’I’ve made friends for life. We’ve been there for each other through everything.’
These friendships grow as life changes. Victoria has shared big moments with her team. They’ve watched the girls grow up and go to college. Victoria’s co-leader has even had 2 children since they started their group together!

The best kind of volunteer ‘work’
The weekly sessions (called unit meetings) are the main focus, but volunteers have plenty of fun too. They often meet up outside of guiding for special events like birthdays or just to catch up. Even the planning has a plus side: 'Our planning sessions almost always include cake or a sweet treat!’

Feeling at home in the community
By getting to know the girls and their parents, Victoria has become a well-known face in her area.
’It really feels like I am part of the community now,’ Victoria explains. ’I love it when I am out and about and the girls wave and come over to say hello.’
Victoria wanted to connect with her new neighbourhood. Volunteering gave her the perfect way to jump in, get involved, and feel at home.
