Anyone! We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and experiences. There’s no requirement to have been involved in guiding before or to have loads of time to give. There's all sorts of flexible ways to get involved, whether you want to volunteer with girls directly or help behind the scenes! 
 
Many of our roles are open to everyone, while some of our leadership roles are available to women only. Find out who can do which role by checking the role requirements tables. 
 
We’ve also got loads for young people to get stuck into, with volunteer roles for girls starting from the age of 10 and boys from the age of 13. We welcome students and teenagers looking for a volunteer opportunity to build their CV, to complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, or develop skills for the future. There’s no upper age limit to volunteering.

Volunteering is a flexible time commitment; you can give as much or as little time as you’d like volunteering. Whether you want to help behind the scenes, at special events, on a one-off basis or get involved every week, there’s loads of ways to inspire girls with Girlguiding.

We have a variety of volunteer roles which are designed to be flexible according to the time and commitment you’re able to give. You’ll be able to discuss your availability with the local volunteer team in your area after you’ve registered to find the role that’s right for you. 

No! Whether you have a certain skillset you’d like to bring to the table to help inspire girls in your community or you’re just looking to try something new and develop your skills, our volunteer roles are designed to be flexible and suit you, your interests and lifestyle.

To keep girls safe, anyone over the age of 18 needs to go through our recruitment and vetting process. All volunteers must complete reference checks. And if your role involves regular contact or staying overnight at a residential event with girls and young women, you’ll need to complete a criminal record disclosure check. Your local volunteer team will be able to advise you on checks needed for different roles and begin the process once you’ve decided which role is right for you. 

For all roles you’ll need to complete some training designed to help keep our members safe. You can complete this training either via the learning platform as an e-learning, an online trainer-led session, or an in-person session in your local area.

We also offer lots of additional online and in-person training sessions which you can take part in, to support you in your volunteer role and your personal development. Find out more about what’s available via our learning and development pages and your progression as a volunteer. 

Uniform helps make sure you’re easily identified as an adult in charge when you’re volunteering. We have a variety of items in our range, with lots of flexibility and personal choice. The only thing you need to be ‘in uniform’ is a top. Our t-shirts are the lowest priced option, starting at £12, easy to style with your own clothes, and comfortable for all activities. Volunteer uniform tops can be worn for unit meetings, days out, and formal events. You can wear your own bottoms, such as jeans or leggings, and still be in uniform.  
 
As a new volunteer, there’s no need to think about uniform until you’ve got started and chosen your volunteer role. Once you’re settled in, if you’re volunteering directly with girls, speak to your local volunteer team about what options are available to get hold of uniform in your area. 

If you aren't able to get hold of any uniform straight away, that's ok. Nobody should be prevented from taking part in guiding activities because they don't have uniform.  

Just as you would apply for opportunities for the first time, you can search for and apply for specific opportunities on our website even if you’re already volunteering for Girlguiding.
