Volunteering helped me get into university

Volunteering for Girlguiding helps you build skills that you need for work and study, just as it did for volunteer Anna

Volunteering at Guides helped me to get onto my midwifery university course as I could demonstrate skills, such as communication and working as part of a team, that I learned in guiding.

I've been involved with Girlguiding since I was a Rainbow. It has helped me meet new friends and develop my confidence, and when I decided to go to university, I could talk about the skills I gained through guiding in my applications.

Volunteering at Guides helped me to get onto my midwifery university course as I could demonstrate skills, such as communication and working as part of a team, that I learned in guiding. This was really important when competing for the small number of places available.

Guiding at university

When I moved to a university away from home, I took a break from guiding. After a year, I moved house and got a car, allowing me to start back at a unit and fill the trefoil-shaped hole in my heart! I have always loved guiding and wanted to give others the experience that I had as a child. I found my local Guide unit online and got in touch with the Leaders.

Gaining new skills

My skills have continued to develop through guiding. Helping to plan meetings has improved my time-management, leadership and presentation skills. Guides has remained a constant for me, giving me stability and a place to ask for help or guidance – this has been particularly reassuring during my time at university.

Our Guide unit

It has been wonderful to see our Guide unit grow and I really hope that it continues as a successful group. We're now looking to the future, aiming to organise some trips or residentials for the girls to give them experiences that will help them in the future. I also hope that we will continue to show the local community what guiding is all about!

Volunteer with us

Come and join us so that we can put on even more great activities for girls to build their confidence, help them make friends and teach them new skills.
