Our Brownies had a sleepover in the library

You don't have to go far to have a magical sleepover - the local library will do - as Brownie Leader Elaine discovered!

When I asked the girls what their favourite part of the sleepover was most of them said everything.

I was inspired to organise the event by a social media story about a customer getting locked overnight in a bookstore. Many people, both adults and children, had commented on how magical it would be to spend the night with so many books at their disposal. So when we were looking for an unusual sleepover venue the local library seemed perfect.

More than 60 Brownies came along

We were overwhelmed by the response! More than 60 Brownies from Box, Corsham and Neston (in Girlguiding Wiltshire North County) enjoyed a book-ish adventure as they brought their torches and sleeping bags to Corsham's Springfield Campus for the library's first lock-in event. The library had only just moved onto the campus and my daughter Tilly said it was extra-special 'staying somewhere no one had ever stayed before.'

We showed how fun books can be

We put a lot of effort into showing the girls just how much fun books and libraries can be. Our activities included a scavenger hunt, creating a sculpture of an oversized stack of books, holding our own book-club-style discussion and making bookmarks and book covers. Then the girls snuggled down into their sleeping bags with a torch and book of their choice.

Our girls want a disco next

When we made our 'unit manifestos' last year as part of doing the Girls Matter: Hear our voice resource, girls said they wanted more sleepovers, swimming, horse riding and discos – we have already managed three out of four this term!

When I asked the girls what their favourite part of the sleepover was, most said everything. Zoe, 9, said 'It was a dream come true to stay in the library.'
