Players of People's Postcode Lottery raise £1.25 million for Girlguiding

4 June 2018

Girlguiding and People’s Postcode Lottery are celebrating five years of funding from players reaching an incredible £1.25 million for the UK’s leading charity for girls and young women.

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have been supporting Girlguiding since 2014, helping the charity on its mission to empower girls to be their best through fun, friendship, challenge and adventure.

Chief Guide Amanda Medler said:

We are delighted and extremely grateful to players of People's Postcode Lottery for supporting our work so generously over the last five years.
Since 2014 this support has enabled us to improve our offer and reach to girls and young women across Great Britain. It has helped us in our mission to really listen to girls and promote their voice and ensure that more girls and young women from all backgrounds benefit from the amazing opportunities available through Girlguiding.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said:

This is a fantastic milestone for such a beloved charity for generations of girls and women. We are delighted that Girlguiding has received such an amazing amount of funding from players to help lots of young girls discover and grow to reach their full potential!

Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the charity has seen support for:

  • the launch of Girlguiding’s extreme winter camp, Sparkle and Ice, now in its second year
  • the launch of Camp CEO, an initiative for young women to develop their confidence and leadership skills
  • ensuring every Girlguiding unit in the UK receives a taster pack of activities ahead of the charity’s new programme launching this summer
  • thousands of girls having adventures at Wellies and Wristbands, a festival-style event for Guides
  • Girlguiding’s Advocate panel representing girls’ views at events across the UK
  • Girlguiding participating in 14 Pride events in 2017
  • Girlguiding’s quarterly Queen’s Guide Award celebrations

Girlguiding members who attended some of the events supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery summarised their experiences:

One of best things about Guides and camps like Sparkle and Ice, is getting to spend time with my friends I don’t go to school with - and trying new and different things. - Olivia, 12, who attended Sparkle & Ice
Taking part and meeting the CEOs really helped boost my confidence. It made me believe I could succeed doing whatever I wanted and showed me there isn’t just one type of person who can become a leader or businesswomaan. Since Camp CEO I have set up my own business, selling my own artwork, cards and decorations at craft fairs and teenage markets. The skills and the confidence I gained from the camp really helped me in doing this. - Anousa Parkin, 17, a past Camp CEO participant
Pride was a great way to show that Girlguiding is for all girls, and that we accept everyone for who they are. - Hannah, 18, who took part in Pride NW
Being an Advocate is the opportunity of a lifetime because it offers you the chance to get your own views heard and speak up for girls and young women across the UK. The other advocates inspired me to do my best every day! - Larissa, 18, a former Girlguiding Advocate

People's Postcode Lottery awards a minimum of 32% of the ticket price to support good causes all over Great Britain including Girlguiding. This fantastic funding from players means we can take our work into more communities, offering adventure and empowerment to the girls and young women who need us most.
