Under the sea

Don't let oceans, rivers or lakes go unexplored. Girls can use masks and snorkels to see what's under the surface - from beautiful plants and rocks, to weird and wonderful creatures.

Overview

For snorkelling, girls swim while wearing a snorkel, which is a short tube that allows them to breathe while viewing what's under the surface of the water.

Because snorkelling involves swimming, you must follow our regulations for either swimming in a swimming pool or swimming in open water.

To take girls snorkelling, you will need to find a reputable local provider with a suitably qualified instructor.

Instructor qualifications

The instructor must hold one of the following qualifications:

In purpose-built swimming pools, there must be one instructor to every 12 participants.

In open water, there must be one instructor to every six participants.

Safety regulations

To do snorkelling, girls must be able to:

  • swim 50 metres
  • keep afloat for five minutes in the clothes normally worn for the activity.

Girls may fulfil these rules wearing a buoyancy aid or life jacket when either is required for the activity.

Be inclusive: If a girl has a medical condition that will affect her ability to swim, ensure that you inform the instructor and make provision to allow her to participate safely.

If snorkelling outside:

Water should be inspected for signs of visible pollution, for example rubbish, blue green algae or chemicals.

Make sure girls and parents are aware of the dangers and symptoms of Weil's disease and what action to take if infection is suspected. On the day of the activity participants should be advised to cover cuts and grazes with waterproof plasters to help prevent infection.
