Ride the winds
Glide through the air suspended beneath the wings of a hang glider
In hang gliding, you are suspended from the glider by a special harness, and launch from hills or are towed by a winch or aircraft.
Solo flights are open to those aged 16 and over.
Tandem flights - where a girl flies with an instructor - are open to those aged 14 and over, as long as:
- the instructor is licensed to take passengers
- the girl is able to understand and carry out the instructions
- the girl's weight is in the provider’s required range.
To take your girls hang gliding, you will need to find a British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) approved site.
Girlguiding insurance does not cover members to undertake aviation activities. You will need to check that the activity provider has adequate insurance cover. Please contact our insurance team for more details.
Check safety regulations below for more information on hang gliding.
This activity must be led by an instructor who is qualified with the BHPA.
The instructor should brief girls on:
- the use of safety and other equipment
- the purpose of the flight
- sensations likely to be experienced while flying.
Hang gliding must be undertaken using the standards and controls laid down by the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) and must take place at a BHPA-approved site.
