Grab your wellies!
Squelch your way through the mud to visit pigs, cows, chickens, and all the other animals at your local farm. You may even come across a llama!
Girls can visit commercial open farms, privately-run working farms or leisure attractions where there are animals, such as petting zoos.
There are many potential hazards on a farm, so brief the girls before the visit on how to stay safe.
For further safety advice, see the Health and Safety Executive Farm safe campaign.
See safety regulations for more farm safety advice.
- Ensure girls follow the Countryside Code.
- On private farms, ensure girls follow the farmer’s instructions at all times.
- On commercial farms, ensure girls follow the safety instructions provided and remain within the designated public areas.
- Girls must wash their hands thoroughly after handling animals to avoid infection from bacteria such as E. coli. Carrying antibacterial hand gel is recommended in case hand-washing facilities are not available.
