Tie yourself in knots
Gets girls working together as they try to release each other.
- Cut a piece of string of about 75cm long for each girl. Ask girls to form pairs.
- One girl ties her string from one wrist to the other, not too tightly. Her partner passes her own string under the first girl’s string, so that the two strings are interlinked and cannot be separated, and then loosely ties the ends to her own wrists. Younger members may need help with this part.
- Challenge the girls to release themselves from each other however they like without actually untying the knots.
- After an agreed time, stop the activity. You can then either reveal the solution or let it remain a mystery for another time!
Here's the solution
One girl makes a U-shaped loop at the centre of her string and passes it through the loop around her partner’s wrist, going from elbow to fingertips. Slip the loop over her hand and they’re free!
