What you'll need for our how-to sessions

If you want to follow along with our Adventure at home festival how to sessions, here's what you'll need

From magic tricks to science experiments - our Adventures at home festival is packed with activities to try.

You can follow along with them during the festival, or have a go another day. If you want to try them out, you'll need a few ingredients and bits of equipment. Check the lists below and get ready to go.

How to… chemistry edition! Clever chemicals

What is that? (Ages 4-7)

  • 2 cups of cornflour
  • 1 cup of water
  • A large bowl and a spoon

Slime time (7-10)

  • Half a cup of cornflour, plus a little extra
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar-free jelly crystals. You can use any agar powder or gelatine-like powder instead.
  • Water
  • A small bowl and spoon
  • A pen and paper

Can’t believe its butter (10-14)

  • An empty, clean jar or container with a lid
  • Whipping cream – enough for half a jar. You can also use double cream.
  • Bread or crackers
  • A butter knife
  • Extra flavourings for your butter such as garlic, salt or chilli – but these are optional

Fudge factory (14-18)

  • 50g of icing sugar or half a cup
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 2 teaspoons of cream cheese
  • A dash of vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • A resealable sandwich bag

How to… illustrate and draw with Aardman Animations

  • Paper and colouring pens or pencils

How to... make your own birdfeeder by Amey (all ages, with parental guidance needed for younger children)

  • Garden wire, twine or string (about 25cm long)
  • Chopping board (to protect your work surface)
  • Bird feed (either bought or you could make your own!)
  • A clean plastic bottle (about 500ml size)
  • 2 pencils
  • A skewer
  • Scissors
  • A measuring jug
  • A large bowl
