500 Brownies take off on a space adventure
Brownie units from across the Midlands had an out-of-this-world day out at the National Space Centre
On 9 February, the National Space Centre in Leicester was buzzing with excitement as 500 Brownies from units across the Midlands came together for a stellar day of space fun.
This once in a lifetime event was made possible thanks to our partnership with the UK Space Agency. Together, we’re working to inspire girls to reach for the stars, challenge stereotypes, and know that space and STEM is for everyone.
A space-tacular day to remember
Hundreds of Brownies from units across the Midlands met up at the National Space Centre for a day of hands-on space exploration. The girls trained like astronauts, made sunspot viewers, and explored the universe in the planetarium – it was a space adventure like no other!
The girls also got to hear from Dhara Patel, the space expert at the National Space Centre, who spoke about wonderful space career opportunities in astronomy and encouraged girls to dream big.
Izzie, 8, from 1st Earls Barton Brownies said her favourite part of the day was the planetarium, where they learnt about the planets and constellations. 'I think space and science is cool and there’s a lot of things to learn.'
After an astronomically fun-filled day, all 500 Brownies went home with a newly earned space interest badge, sponsored by the UK Space Agency.
Many units shared their highlights from the day
A huge thank you to Girlguiding Midlands, the UK Space Agency, and the National Space Centre for making this amazing day happen. We also want to give a huge shout-out to the volunteers and parents who helped make the trip possible – and, of course, to every curious Brownie who got stuck in and had a blast!
Inspiring the next generation of space explorers
Did you know that our flagship annual research, the Girls’ Attitudes Survey, found that many girls think STEM subjects are ‘more for boys’? Girls also told us they don’t see enough women role models in STEM.
That’s why we’ve been working with the UK Space Agency to reignite girls’ curiosity about space and STEM. The survey also showed that many girls dream of becoming scientists and astronauts – and we’re here to show them that STEM is for everyone, and girls can do anything.
Last year, thanks to our partnership, girls had the incredible opportunity to meet and interview Meganne Christian, a reserve astronaut and scientist.
