Changes to the Equality and diversity policy
And what it means for you.
We want Girlguiding to be a place where everyone is welcome and free to be themselves. Whoever they are, and wherever they're from.
And so does the Girlguiding community. When we consulted on our 2020+ strategy, we heard from over 200 of our girls, volunteers, staff, and parents and carers.
You told us that you want us to be more welcoming, more inclusive, and as diverse as the communities we live in.
We know that we didn't always get this right. And we know we have more work to do.
Our work on diversity and inclusion is a journey. And as part of this, we’ve updated our Equality and diversity policy to better reflect where we are on this journey.
Alongside setting out our ambitions for diversity and inclusion, the policy emphasises our equity-based approach to achieving them.
This means considering people’s personal needs to make sure they have the same opportunities as others, like making reasonable adjustments.
The policy also sets out our commitment to being a trans-inclusive organisation.
We’ve changed the policy to clarify that Girlguiding is open to those of all faiths and philosophical beliefs.
But expressions of those beliefs must be in line with our Code of Conduct, policies, and values.
To make things easier to read with less clicking around, we’ve explained the various characteristics protected by the policy.
To make things easier to find for volunteers, members, and staff, we've added a specific section for members of staff.
We’ve written a new procedure to sit alongside the policy, which explains what you need to do on a practical level. It includes useful information about:
- Recognising breaches of the policy
- How to report any concerns you have
- What we’ll do if there’s a breach of the policy.
If you’d like to find out more, you can complete the new Including all e-learning.
This’ll help you to understand why inclusion is important and how to recognise and respond to discrimination.
