Meet the Deputy Chief Guide

Meet Sally, our Deputy Chief Guide, and find out how she wants to make a difference through guiding

I’d love it if we could get to a place where every community knows their local guiding unit and actively involves them in community events. Together we can make a positive difference to girls, women and their communities. - Deputy Chief Guide Sally Illsley.

Sally was appointed Deputy Chief Guide in June 2016 and looks forward to supporting volunteers across the country and ensuring their voices are heard.

As Deputy Chief Guide she is also a Trustee and Chair of the Chief Commissioner Group. She has the vital role of ensuring that decisions made by the Trustees are informed by the Countries and Regions, and that Being our best guides Girlguiding priorities across the UK.

Her goals as Deputy Chief Guide

Sally wants ‘even more girls to have life changing experiences through Girlguiding', so she’ll be encouraging more:

  • international opportunities for members and girls - she has fond memories of her once in a life time camping and canoeing trip to Vassaro in Sweden
  • meaningful social action in our communities – everyone should know what it’s like to ‘make a difference’ to others
  • more girls enjoying a full and active programme in Girlguiding - Sally still enjoys anything that involves tents and fire, most of all.

Sally’s experiences in guiding

I joined Guides at 10 and loved it instantly. Fantastic leaders, great friends, fun and adventure have kept me involved ever since.

To this day she continues to be a Unit Leader, having worked with Guides or The Senior Section for over 30 years. She is proud to have served in several senior volunteer management roles at Girlguiding, especially taking the Lead for the Centenary Adventures.

At home

Sally’s mum to two grown-up daughters - one is a Guide Unit Leader and one is a Trefoil Guild member.

On the rare occasions I get time away from my guiding and charity commitments, I love gardening and I’m a keen DIY enthusiast – I can often be found drilling holes into the walls of my Leicestershire home.
