Have you heard that the world's first all-female crew on a Class A Ship will be taking part in the Tall Ships Race 2008? And did you know that Girlguiding UK and the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) were behind it? Forty Senior Section members and ten professional crew from JST will man the STS Lord Nelson, the first tall ship designed to allow able bodied and disabled people to sail together as equals.
STS Lord Nelson will race against a fleet of roughly 100 other ships including around 20 Class A squareriggers, leaving Liverpool on 22 July 2008 and arriving in Maloy, Norway (hopefully!) ten days later.
Jubilee Sailing Trust's Chief Executive, Amanda Butcher, said: 'It's a great opportunity to show what girls can do in a typically male environment. We aim for the permanent crew - including captain, cook and engineers - to also be women, so it might even give girls some maritime-themed career ideas!'
There are 20 girls taking part in the race who have disabilities. Malaika is deaf. Here she tells us how the ship has been adapted and how she can't wait to take part.
