Service in Guiding

Aim: Take an Active part in guiding at a range of levels

Challenge: Complete all four elements. At least one element should involve working within at least two Guiding sections.

Element 1. Carry out practical guiding service for a period of 60 hours. At least 20 hours should consist of one activity or project.

Element 2. Attend a residential guiding event and accept a responsibility that is new to you or that furthers your experience. The responsibility should be appropriate to your capabilities and the event should last for at least two days and two nights

Element 3. Take an active part in the planning of an event, which will involve the participation of at least two units.

Element 4. Actively participate in a working group or committee run by Girlguiding UK or your Country or Region, or get involved in an Association issue. Track progress and give feedback on your experiences to a local unit.

Outdoor Challenge

Aim: Develop Leadership and teamwork skills in an outdoor environment.

Challenge: Participate in an outdoor challenge and demonstrate leadership skills as well as the ability to be part of a team by completing both elements.

Element 1. Before undertaking the challenge you must:
a Have completed the first six modules of either the Senior Section Permit or the Camp and Holiday Scheme.
b Undertake further trainings as required to prepare you for the challenge.

Element 2. Participate in an exploration or an expedition to last four days (three nights) accompanied by your peers.

  1. Members of the group can be anyone aged between 15 and 26 and need not be members of Girlguiding UK. At least one other member of the group must be female.
  2. You must have written consent from an adult with parental responsibility for anyone under the age of 18 and these adults must be notified if the group is to include males.
  3. Every person attending must complete a G/H form.
  4. There must be a minimum of four in the group and a maximum of seven.
  5. You must complete the relevant Association forms and obtain the necessary permission.
  6. You must adhere to The Guiding Manual requirements.
  7. A maximum of four in the group may be assessed for the Award, and each candidate must take a leadership role during the challenge.
  8. All members of the group being assessed must prepare a report of the challenge for the assessor showing where they actively took a leadership role (there will be a number of leader tasks or you could rotate), as well as playing their part in the team.
Personal Skill Development

Aim: Develop a personal interest or hobby.

Challenge: Over a minimum period of 60 hours over 12 months, take an existing skill to a new personal level or start a new skill and develop it.

Community Action

Aim: Encourage active participation in the world in which we live.

Challenge: Over a 12 month period undertake two projects about a chosen topic. One should be of a practical nature; the other should be research orientated.

Element 1. Each project should include:

  • Gathering information about your chosen topic.
  • Planning and carrying out your project with others in your chosen community.
  • Evaluating your role and the effectiveness of the project.

Your chosen topic must enable you to become practically involved at a local or regional level, and allow you to undertake further research to deepen your understanding of the topic at a regional/national and international level.

Element 2. At the end of your 12 months you should present the findings of your research and an evaluation of the practical project either to those who have been involved with your project or another group of people to be agreed with your mentor.

Residential Experience

Aim: Develop inter-personal and communication skills in a residential setting.

Challenge: Participate in a residential experience run by Girlguiding UK or another agency lasting no less than three days (two nights) where the majority of participants are unknown to you.
