What is a Mentor for? |
You will need to choose a personal mentor to advise and support you over the next three years. Your mentor can be anyone you know through guiding but your Queen's Guide Coordinator can help you if you can't think of anyone.
Once you have registered, the initial meeting with your mentor should look at how you intend to complete the Award. At the end of this meeting you will have an idea of how you plan to use the next three years to complete the Award.
If you need to take a break during your time working for the Award, you will need to discuss it with your mentor.
How long does it take for me to complete the Award? |
It will take at least 12 months for you to complete the Award and you can work on it for a maximum of three years. However, you can take up to 12 months as a break from the Award if you plan this at the start in discussion with your mentor, or part the way through if your plans and circumstances change. You can take this break if you are taking exams, starting a new job, or having a gap year, for example. You must complete the Award before your 26th birthday.
What's the maximum age I can start? |
Technically there is no upper age limit to starting the Award, but some clauses take 12 months to complete so you'll need to start before your 25th birthday. However, most people take longer than this, so you are advised to start as soon as you can.
Who signs off each clause? |
Before starting each clause, pick someone who can confirm you have met the challenge. You must agree this choice with your mentor and Queen's Guide Coordinator.
What counts for the Award? |
A project undertaken for Look Wider, Making It Count!, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award or the Leadership Qualification may be used but must be part of your original plan. Work done at school or college may not be used unless you take it to a higher level. Make sure that you check the requirements of both Award Schemes before doing the activity otherwise it may not count!
What happens when I finish? |
When you have finished, take your record book to your Queen's Guide Coordinator for her to check against your plan and confirm you have completed the Award. Your record book will then be sent to CHQ and signed by the Chief Guide. When confirmation of your Award is received your badge and certificate will be presented locally. There will also be a formal presentation which is held annually and may be at CHQ or other venues. Details will be sent to you.
