What is a Phase? |
Each Octant of Look Wider is split into three Phases. Phase 1 is all about starting out with something or trying an activity for the first time. Phase 2 is about building on existing skills by taking an activity to a new level. You will need to spend about 12 hours on this activity at this phase. Phase 3 is about taking things further still, by gaining a qualification or teaching someone else.
Who decides what Phase a challenge counts for? |
You decide, with the help of your support group, where youd like an activity to fit, based on how much of a challenge it is for you.
Do you have to start at Phase 1? |
No. You can do the phases in any order, and you dont have to complete one Octant before you start working on another.
Is there a badge for completing Phase 1, 2 and 3 for all eight Octants? |
No, there isnt. There is a certificate for the completion of each Octant (called an Octant certificate). There is a badge and certificate that recognises the completion of the Chief Guides Challenge (Phase 1 and 2 in each Octant). Both of these can be used in Record of Achievement files and portfolios and commemorates the completion of a wide range of activities.

Im not part of a Ranger unit can I work on the Look Wider programme? |
Yes anyone aged 14 to 25 can! Click here to see just what a Senior Section member is.
Can I count an activity Ive done at school? |
You can count an activity if you have undertaken it as an extra-curricular activity, and not as part of your mainstream education. For example, you may count learning to play badminton if you attend an after-school club, but not if you learn to play in a PE lesson.
What about things Im doing at work? |
You can count activities undertaken through work if they are not part of your paid employment. For example, you may count volunteering to help mentor students on the Young Enterprise scheme if this is not part of your job description and takes place outside of your paid employment. You may not count a training course undertaken as part of your employment for which you are paid to attend.

What is a support group? Who can be in my support group? |
A support group is the group of people you choose to encourage and guide you as you work on a challenge for Look Wider. The group can be made up of friends (from Girlguiding UK and outside too), Leaders, instructors and so on. The Look Wider CD gives examples of possible support groups.
Do I have to have the same support group for every challenge? |
No you can have a different support group each time if you want. For example, if you are trying rock-climbing, youll want someone with particular knowledge in that area, but that person might not be suitable to support you on a Personal values challenge.
Do I have to make/renew my Promise to work on Look Wider? |
No. You can take part in the Look Wider programme and receive Octant Certificates without making the Promise. However, if you want to gain the Chief Guides Challenge Certificate, you do need to make or renew your Promise before you receive it.
