Nominations are now open for the 2008 Philip Lawrence Awards for good citizenship. The Philip Lawrence Awards, run by childrens charity 4Children in partnership with the Home Office, were established in 1996 and reward outstanding achievements in good citizenship by young people aged 11 to 20.
Could you be an award winner? Do you know of, or work with, a group of young people who have taken the initiative to improve their lives and the lives of others?
The national scheme recognises groups that are making a real contribution to their local community and the lives of others; and groups that promote respect and understanding of faiths, culture and communities internationally. The focus is on exemplary activities examples of young people working together, promoting citizenship and overcoming the difficult situations some young people face.
Amidst heightened fears over youth crime, stars are showing support for celebrating young peoples contributions to society. Singer / Songwriter and Musician, Katie Melua, who launched this year's Awards along with the Home Secretary and Frances Lawrence, said:
'The winners demonstrate the huge potential that young people have to change society for the better.'
