Guiding has given many girls and young women the self-confidence they need to succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields.

‘Guiding was great for building confidence at a formative stage of development. When you tried your hand at something and it was a success it gave you the confidence to reach for new goals.’

BFIIN Inventor Diamond Award

Elaine Stephen, a primary school teacher from Peterhead, was concerned about the safety of young children in her care while out on school trips. She wanted a product that would keep the children walking together and minimise risk. As there was no product like this on the market she designed and invented her own – the Walkodile®. This simple yet effective device makes taking groups of children out and about much safer. It has received widespread acclaim from teachers, parents and children, and won Elaine numerous innovation and product development awards in the UK and Europe.
