TOP ACTS PERFORM FOR 31,500 AT SPECIAL ‘GIRL-ONLY’ GIG FOR GIRLGUIDING UK

Girls from right across the UK witnessed some of the top music acts at Wembley Arena in London on Saturday and Sunday (1 and 2 October) at Girlguiding UK’s Big Gig 2011.

Pixie Lott, Olly Murs, The Wanted, Alexis Jordan, Dionne Bromfield, Ed Sheeran and a host of other special guests wowed the ‘girl-only’ audience at the exclusive event for Guides, all aged 10 and above. The event was hosted by children’s TV presenter, former Brownie and daredevil Helen Skelton.

The event is hugely popular and this year tickets sold out in record time. In just four hours the Saturday performances were oversubscribed and Girlguiding UK decided to host another gig on the Sunday to try to meet demand.

A total of 31,500 girls watched three spectacular performances. In the months leading up to the show, girls have been hotly debating who will be appearing at this year’s gig. Among this year’s performers, Ed Sheeran is one of the most talked-about male artists, while Eliza Doolittle was the female performer frequently discussed on the Guides’ online forum.

Gill Slocombe, Girlguiding UK Chief Guide, said: “The Big Gig is extremely popular and we were overwhelmed by just how many girls applied for tickets this year! For many girls, this is the first live performance they will experience and the fact that they can enjoy this in a safe space surrounded by their guiding friends makes it all the more special.”
