GIRLGUIDING UK APPOINTS NEW CHIEF
GUIDE
Girlguiding UK, the largest voluntary
organisation for girls and young women in the UK, has appointed a
new Chief Guide. Gill Slocombe was officially inducted on the 21st
May during a ceremony at the organisation’s headquarters in
London.
The Chief Guide is the Chair of Girlguiding
UK’s Trustee Board and the most senior volunteer in the
organisation as well as being a figurehead for the more than half a
million members across the UK.
Gill is a youth worker by profession and
currently works for Somerset County Council managing a scheme to
provide buddies for vulnerable young people including young
offenders, care leavers, young carers and parents. Within guiding,
Gill has recently completed an appointment as the Chief
Commissioner for the South West of England as well as supporting
local guiding in her hometown of Taunton by developing their
campsite facilities.
Gill said ‘As a former Brownie, Guide and Sea
I feel very passionate about guiding. The skills and experiences
that girls and young women can gain are phenomenal, from abseiling
to zorbing, exploring new cultures both at home and abroad as well
as shouting out about the issues that matter to them is just a
snapshot of the activities that we do in guiding. As a movement,
Girlguiding UK is constantly evolving to meet the needs of today’s
girls and so I am thrilled to be starting my five-year term as
Chief Guide at such an exciting period for the organisation.”
The new Chief Guide will be supported by
Angela Milln who was appointed as Deputy Chief Guide during the
same ceremony.
Gill Slocombe succeeds Liz Burnley CBE who has
completed her term office, which included leading the organisation
through its successful Centenary celebrations during 2010.
