Young Leader Qualification

The Young Leader Qualification is designed to help you take an active, positive part in running your Rainbows, Brownies or Guides unit. Its open to Senior Section members aged 14 to 16. After you turn 16 you can start working on the full Leadership Qualification. To find out more about this qualification please refer to your Senior Section CD. This can be purchased from the online shop.

What does it involve?

The qualification consists of two modules, completed practically rather than through tests or examinations.

  • Module 1 - Your role in the programme

This allows you to demonstrate how well you know and understand the programme for the section you're working with. For example, you can show that you can lead a Pow Wow if you work with a Brownie pack. If you change the section you help out with you'll need to repeat this module.

  • Module 2 - Your role in Girlguiding UK

This module is about showing you understand the Senior Section Promise. It'll also test that you understand that Leadership is about the relationships between you and:

    • all the members of the unit
    • the rest of the Unit Team
    • other Leaders in your area
    • the wider community.

Achieving the Young Leadership Qualification

  • Keep a diary of your units activities as well as your own meeting planning.
  • Be a reliable member of the unit team let Leaders know well in advance if you cant make a meeting.
  • Choose a supporter who can help you and give you advice. They will review your progress as you go on. It could be a Leader within your unit, a fellow Senior Section member or a Young Leader Leader (if you have one).
  • If you need peer support, link up with a Senior Section unit or talk to your Young Leader Leader about arranging local Young Leaders meetings.
  • Any member who has seen you do something can sign your record sheets your Leader, supporter or the girls in your unit.
  • You must take/renew the Promise when you're ready to gain the Qualification.

Finished?

Once you think you've finished you should check it through with your supporter. Your District Commissioner should then sign the final section in your record book. They will notify the Badge Secretary and a badge will be presented to you.

Anything that you do towards your Young Leader Qualification will count towards the full Leadership Qualification if you decide to go on and do this.
