Senior Section Permits

Become a holiday planning-expert by planning and managing overnight events to gain your Overnight or Senior Section Permit.

What does it involve?

There are two residential permits for members of the Senior Section:

  • The Overnight Permit allows any Senior Section member to take up to eight people from the Senior Section or Guide section away overnight for no longer than 24 hours. Three modules must be completed.
  • The Senior Section Permit allows any Senior Section member to do the same as the overnight permit but for a camp or holiday of two nights or more. A minimum of six modules must be completed, depending on the event and the age of the participants.

Both permits may be used for a base camp/holiday or a mobile expedition camp/holiday in lowland or open country.

Achieving the permits

  • You must have a relationship with the eight members you take away. They could be peers or members of the Guide or Senior Section unit you work with. This event must be held with the approval of the appropriate Leader.
  • If you hold a permit you can also take an extension module that allows these camps or holidays to take place abroad (for Senior Section members only). This is for between four and eight people, including yourself. Before starting this module you must have already organised and led at least one camp or holiday.
  • Parental consent is required for all those going away aged under 18 years.
  • When working towards either permit, check the latest edition of Key Information before making any plans.
  • All the relevant forms you will need can be found in the resources section of the website.
  • At the March 2011 update of the Senior Section CD, changes were made to the modules of the Senior Section Permit to match up the Senior Section Permit modules to the 2009 revisions of the Training Opportunities: Camp and Holiday Scheme modules. This is in order to help Camp and Holiday Scheme Mentors to accredit experience gained from the Senior Section Permit over to modules of the Camp and Holiday Scheme. The processes and activities required to gain the Senior Section Permit are unchanged. Only the recording of the modules has changed, and details of the changes are in the table below:

Finished?

  • Make sure you get the modules signed off by an Assessor who understands the Senior Section and holds a camp or holiday qualification but isn't your Leader or someone you're regularly involved in guiding with. More details about an Assessors responsibilities can be found on the Senior Section CD and your local Senior Section Adviser or Outdoor Activities Adviser should be able to help you pick the best Assessor.
