October 2008

October was a fairly quiet guiding month for me with heading back to Uni so I thought I'd include the last week of September in here too since it was fairly busy.

During that week a group of us from the Division went to a local Uni campus to try and recruit some students during Fresher's week! It wasn't as busy as we'd hoped but we still managed to a get a fair few names. Hopefully they'll all come along to our fun evening and decide to stay! We're a nice bunch really.

October, like I said was quiet for me. I've moved back away to Middlesbrough for Uni and live there during the week, only returning home at weekends. This makes Guides a bit hard since it's on a Tuesday which this year happens to be my fullest day with the latest finish. So far I haven't been able to make it back (even though I have Wednesday off to 'recover' at home) but if my timetable eases off a bit I'm hoping to make it back. In fact, I know I'll have to because as ever, guiding has managed to find its way into my studies and into my final year project.

Yikes!

We did get our places for Changing the World in York booked though. There's 3 leaders going with 4 Guides - should be fun! I've only been in York once before and that was just after the new NEE HQ opened so I'm looking forward to going again on November 1st to find out more. One of the Guides has never been on a train before so it should be interesting!

Ranger meetings are more flexible and we meet on different days every time - although, more often then not it's on a Friday - meaning I can be there more often! First thing we did this month was have a "Wii and chocolate night". A few of the Rangers own Wii's and a few others (mainly the older ones - myself excluded) had never been on a Wii before so we thought it would be fun to combine with our favourite food, chocolate!!! We had a great time munching on chocolate (didn't have time to make the chocolate cake - too busy playing games!) and playing on the Wii. I was rubbish at the ski jumping but made up for it with my 'enthusiasm' in tennis. I can't understand why only 2 of us were jumping and leaping around like nutters when we were serving or doing backhand hits- just flicking your wrist is boring! I even managed to win the golf - which was a shock. Our leader turned out to be the best bowler though and the younger Rangers were better drivers then those of us with driving licences.

The next meeting was on a Wednesday and I happened to be home in Newcastle so managed to pop along en route back to Middlesbrough. It was a combined 18th birthday/passing driving test part and Aim-Hi night. I got down there nicely in time for the cake - perfect!!! Didn't have time to join in many of the Aim-Hi activities but we all agreed that asking Rainbows to make vegetables their friends and then eat them was a bit cruel.
