Kat's blog

January 2009

Hello all!!!

Firstly, I'm sorry for the delay in telling you about my Jan - I've been rather busy trying to sort various urgent Uni things out. That'll be a whole other blog though!

So, back to Jan. I have to say, it wasn't the most exciting of months for me. It was largely filled with trying to do coursework (hooray for somehow managing the deadline!) for my Advanced Multimedia Applications module at Uni. "Advanced what??" you may ask. Basically we had to design and build a prototype website for an imaginary product using Flash (I chose a bubble gum company for my scenario). I thought it would be easy enough but nooooo! Naturally it took me the best part of forever to work out bits of the coding! I finally got it finished though and I should really get started on building the full version (not due in until May) which includes 2 games. Yikes.

Being a web designer and not developer my scripting skills aren't brilliant so this'll certainly be interesting. At least we're allowed to refer to tutorials.

On a more interesting note, I've been trying to work on my Photography for my QG skill. I've still got an awful lot to learn but I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of the camera. I joined a few groups on Flickr for people with the same camera as me including a competition group and shockingly in my first competition I came 4th!!! I've not done quite so well since but I tried to improve my people picture skills by taking photos of a friend's (and fellow Guide Leader's) 1 1/2 year old daughter when they came round to visit. I'm quite proud of how they've come out but it's made me realise I really need a lens which is good for lower light - anyone got a spare few hundred quid?

Guiding wise I've only made it to 2 Ranger meetings. :( The first was cooking pancakes (I know we were a month early but we don't care!) where we discovered the younger Rangers had never flipped pancakes before. A few lessons in pancake flipping followed and I think we only had 1 drop all night (mentioning no names there "Dougie") which was good. The grey team (we split into 2 groups according to which colour hoodie we own) won the best pancakes competition and it wasn't just because of bribery! Ours were by far the best. And speaking of being the best, we went bowling again and despite being full of painkillers and rather dopey (the wrist but best not to get me started on that) I won both games which secured wins for the grey team and then the over 18 team. I somehow managed to get 3 strikes in a row at 1 point too. I've certainly come a long way from winning prizes for being the worst bowler at school
