Real role models

Real role modelsEarlier this year, Girlguiding published the Girls’ Attitudes Explored…Role Models report, which found that girls and young women across the UK suffer from an alarming ‘role model deficit’. The research found many girls had a narrow range of role models – largely from reality TV or the entertainment industry – which led to a limited range of aspirations for their futures.

Girlguiding decided to tackle this problem with a series of videos of inspirational women from a range of backgrounds and careers.

We also spoke to a series of high-profile former members to find out why they loved their time in guiding, and how they feel the skills and experiences they gained have benefitted them in later life.

You can contribute to the debate on Twitter using the hashtag #RealRoleModels, or why not visit the Girlguiding Facebook page and post your comments?

It’s hard to consider what career you want to pursue or what you want to achieve in life if you don’t have strong role models to inspire you. Girlguiding met ten inspirational women from a range of backgrounds – including several industries traditionally dominated by men – and found out about their jobs, the advantages they enjoy and the challenges they face.

Women in the Lead 2012

Girlguiding is proud to have many famous former members who have gone on to achieve great success after guiding. We asked some of them what they loved about being a member and to reflect on how it has benefitted them as they have pursued careers in broadcasting, sport, politics, and beyond.
