World Guiding give to the Centenary Fund
Attendees at the 34th World Association of
Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) World Conference in Edinburgh
have given a wonderful boost to the Centenary Fund.
Girlguiding UK was thrilled to receive nearly £8,000 for
the Fund, which gives grants to enable girls to realise their
dreams.
We would also like to extend our thanks for
the wonderful presents we received from so many of WAGGGS' Member
Organisations. We hope everyone enjoyed the Conference as much as
we did and look forward to catching up with all our friends at the
35th World Conference in Hong Kong.
The Centenary Fund is based on the vision of
Olave Baden-Powell, who left a legacy to Girlguiding UK to
start a grant-making fund to enable girls and young women in
the UK to follow their dreams. We’re excited
about supporting girls with some really interesting
aspirations - from taking part in the 2011 Athens Special Olympics
to kick-starting a promising career in photography.
The following testimony is by a
Guide with learning disabilities from East Sussex,
who received a grant to fulfil her dream of representing
Great Britain in judo in the 2011 Athens Special Olympics.
She says, 'I am really proud of myself for
being selected by the Great Britain squad. I am really looking
forward to going and hope I get gold. I hope by going to
Athens it will build my independence skills and confidence. Judo
and Guides makes me feel good about myself. I have learnt that I
can achieve when I put my mind to it and work hard.'
