The Big March 2012
Girlguiding UK has joined forces with
Beatbullying to support The Big March 2012 – a virtual march
highlighting a child’s right to be safe.
Members of the public can participate in this
worldwide event on 1 March by creating a personal
‘avatar’, which will join millions of others in a march
across the website screens of all the organisations supporting the
cause, which includes Girlguiding UK.
At the end of the march, a (real) petition
will be presented to the United Nations in New York, asking for a
child’s right to be safe from bullying, abuse or threats to be
preserved in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
(UNCRC).
Famous figures including Sir Michael
Parkinson, model Twiggy, and girl band The Saturdays are already
involved.
JLS singer and Beatbullying ambassador Aston
Merrygold is also taking part. He says, ‘I never thought I would be
affected by bullying but I was, and as a Beatbullying ambassador I
know how important it is that young people get the support
available at CyberMentors.org.uk and know that they are not
alone.
‘Bullies mustn’t get away with it. We need to
make sure the world’s children are safe from bullying and abuse, so
this year I’m taking part in Beatbullying’s The Big March 2012 to
stop bullying around the world for good – join my avatar and march
with thousands of others on the world’s first global virtual march
at www.beatbullying.org/bigmarch.’
