International Day of the Girl Child
The United Nations has declared 11 October 2012 as the world’s
first International Day of the Girl Child. You can find out more
about the day, and share information about taking action on girls’
rights, on the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts
(WAGGGS) website.
Later this week, the International Day for Disaster Reduction
is taking place on 13 October. This day will raise awareness about
helping people in developing countries live with the natural
hazards they face, and the focus for 2012 is on girls and young
women.
Girlguiding's all-section activity pack for members
called Together We Can is based on the UN’s eight
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The girls and young women who
use it learn more about the goals and why they are so important,
and plus they are inspired to do take action and help
achieve the MDGs.
